Protocols and

Networking
Devices
Objectives
• By the end of the lesson, each student will be
able to:
i. define protocol
ii. Identify different types of networking devices
Protocol

• set of rules that allow the networking

devices to communicate with each
other
Protocols used in Networking
i. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol)
ii. FTP(File Transfer Protocol)
iii. TELNET (Network Terminal Protocol)
iv. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
v. HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
vi. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
vii. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
viii. POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
ix. IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
TCP/IP

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol

It breaks the data to be sent into little packets and
reassembles it at the destination.
IP stands for Internet Protocol
It is responsible for routing the packets into
desired destination
FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol

– It is a protocol used for getting and/or sending files to
another computer or network
TELNET

TELNET stands for Network Terminal Protocol

– helps to log in at a remote computer and exchange
data/information
SMTP

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

– Protocol used for sending and receiving electronic mail
(email)
HTTP

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol

– Protocol used for sending and receiving web-pages
Networking Devices

Bridge
Router
Gateway
Switch
Hub
i. Bridge

 a device that connect two or

more networks of same
type and treat as a single
large network
 know the address of all the
computers on either sides
 Smart
ii. Router

 a device that connect two or

more networks and handles
different protocols
 know the address of all the
computers on either sides
 Smart
iii. Gateway

 a device that connect two

dissimilar protocols
iv. Switch

 a device that act as a central connection between

two or more computers on a network
 smart
v. Media Converter

 networking device that

connects two dissimilar
media types such as twisted
pair with fiber optic cable
vi. Wireless Access Point

 A wireless access point (WAP or AP) is a device that

allows wireless communication devices to connect
to a wireless network using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or
related standards.
vii. Modem

 A device that converts digital

signal to analog signal and vice
versa.
