JESUS COMMANDS US TO
WORSHIP THE ONE LIVING GOD
Learning Objectives
After completing this module, you will be able to . . .
• explains the meaning of the first commandment “I am the LORD your God: you
shall not have strange gods before me”

• gives importance to the success sacrifices of the Filipinos for God, country and
humanity.
WHAT DOES THE FIRST COMMANDMENT SAY?
The First Commandment states, “I am the Lord your God, you shall not have other
Gods before me”. It means that the Lord God the Holy Trinity is the only God
whom we must adore and serve. He must be above all our other interest and
values. Therefore, God must be the highest priority in our life, the center of our
lives.
What are the effects if we obey the First Commandment?
• If we adore the One True God we become free from any attachment to anything
that enslaves us. When we become materialistic – desiring to have lots of money
and branded clothes or be popular in school, we lose our focus to God.
• To realize that we are all under One God makes us one Family. This means that
we should end all conflicts due to religion, race, and ideological beliefs because
God wants us all to be united with Him. We should not hurt one another because
God adopted all of us through Jesus.

• The oneness of God makes it possible for all of us to have a genuine unified love
of God.
JESUS TEACHES US THE VALUE
OF RESPECT FOR OUR PARENTS
Learning Objective

demonstrates sincere compliance with the national laws regarding environmental

protection
WHAT DOES THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT
SAY?
The fourth commandment orders to: “Honor your father and your mother” To
honor means to show gratitude, affection, respect, obedience and care to parents.
The fourth commandment treats the origin of our human lives, our parents. Parents
are procreators of human life, acting as God’s free loving agents in bringing to
birth a new human life. In honoring our parents we honor God himself.
The Fourth commandment obliges us to take care of our aged parents when the time
comes when they need our support. “My son, take care of your father when he is
old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fails, be considerate with
him, do not abuse him in the fullness of your strength. We are reminded of our
responsibilities to our parents when we become adults.
Obeying the Fourth Commandment makes our Christian Family a strong union just
like a domestic Church experienced as a “community of love.” It is in the family
where we are born.
Aside from honoring our parents, the Fourth Commandment obliges us to respect
and obey all the legitimate authority such as our guardians, school authorities,
government officials and Church leaders, who form and implement laws.
Abiding the rules of the country is also obeying God.
WHY DO WE NEED TO FOLLOW RULES
IN OUR COMMUNITY?
There are many people who don’t like following the rules because they represent
some kind of restrictions. However, in reality, life can’t be placed in order without
rules. Without rules and regulations as we know them, our community would
definitely be in chaos.

For example, if everyone could simply do what they want in a classroom, do you
think much learning would take place? Is it an ideal environment for learning? A
classroom without rules would be chaotic.
Today, we’re going to discuss the rule definition and its importance in our society.

A rule is a statement telling people what they should do in order to achieve

success or a benefit of some kind.
Why Rules are important?

Why should we follow the guidelines that have been established in our community or
country?

 Keep the people safe
 Maintain peace and order
 Protect the weak and promote Justice
 Develop discipline among all the people
 Promote responsibility
We must therefore abide by the laws of the community created by legitimate authorities
since they also represent God to us in a very special way.
