Google Design : Why Google.com Homepage
Looks So Simple?
Google’s goal - make as much information accessible as possible

Google’s focus – on the search. Load faster and therefore search

results load faster.
Keeping it simple keeps the focus on the search, not the community

Differentiate between Yahoo – a “hub” – people doing searches there,

then staying and socializing and pretty much saying inside pages of
Yahoo to related to Yahoo
How Search Works  Search- it happens billions of times a day in the
blink of an eye. Explore the art and science that
makes it possible.

Crawling & Indexing

 The journey of a query starts before you ever type a

search, with crawling and indexing the web of
trillions of documents.

How Search Works

 These processes lay the foundation — they're how

we gather and organize information on the web so
we can return the most useful results to you.

 Our index is well over 100,000,000 gigabytes, and

we’ve spent over one million computing hours to
build it.
Finding information by crawling

Uses software known as “web crawlers” to

discover publicly available webpages.

The most well-known crawler is called

“Googlebot.”

Crawlers look at webpages and follow links on

those pages, much like you would if you were
browsing content on the web.

The crawl process begins with a list of web

addresses from past crawls and sitemaps
provided by website owners.

Computer programs determine which sites to

crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch
from each site.
