BATCH CONTINUOUS

PLUG FLOW REACTOR

CONTINUOUS STIRRED TANK

REACTOR
Batch Reactor

Perfectly mixed
No flow in or out
Advantages
•  High conversion per unit volume for one pass
• Flexibility of operation
• Easy to clean
Disadvantages
• High labor costs per batch,
• The variability of products from batch to batch,
• difficulty of large-scale production
Applications
• High labor costs per batch,
• The variability of products from batch to batch,
• difficulty of large-scale production
Plug Flow Reactor (PFR)

No radial gradients – only axial

Steady state
The time spent in the reactor, the
residence time, is equal for all
elements:
CONTINUOUS STIRRED TANK REACTOR
• Run at steady state with continuous flow of
reactants and products;
• The feed assumes a uniform composition
throughout the reactor, exit stream has the
same composition as in the tank.
Advantages
• Good temperature control
• Simplicity of construction
• Low operating (labor) cost
• Easy to clean
• Disadvantages
• Lowest conversion per unit volume
• By-passing and channeling possible with poor
agitation
