Welcome to Uttarakhand! – Things to Do

Officially, the State of Uttarakhand is often referred to as the Devbhoomi due to many ancient Hindu temples
and pilgrimage centres found throughout the state. Uttarakhand is known for the natural environment of the
Himalayas, borders Tibet to the north; Nepal to the east; the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south and
Himachal Pradesh to the west and north-west as well as Haryana on its south-western corner. The state capital,
Dehradun, lies 236 kilometres north of India's capital, New Delhi, and 168 kilometres from Chandigarh. The city
is famous for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding
regions such as Mussoorie (33 km), and Auli (300 km)and the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar (53 km) and
Rishikesh (45 km). Dehradun is also known for its Basmati rice and bakery products, as well as tailors*.The
airport (Jolly Grant) serves Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh and is about 31 km from the city of Dehradun
(and about 49 km from the UPES Campus). It takes about 90 minutes from the airport to the Campus.
