SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
TOPIC

• Topic 1 : intrusion Detection System

• Topic 2 : Emergency Communications
• Topic 3 : Barrier Gate
• Topic 4 : Platform Screen Door System (PSPDS)
• Topic 5 : Emergency Brake System (EBS)
• Topic 6 : RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety
•Course Objective

THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO EXPOSE STUDENTS TO TRAIN

SAFETY SYSTEM, IT ALSO EMPHASIZE ON THE BASIC
CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES OF SAFETY RAILWAY
TECHNOLOGY.
TOPIC 1 : INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEM

• Intrusion Detection System in Railway field

• An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a device or software application
that monitors a network for malicious activity or policy violations. Any
malicious activity or violation is typically reported or collected centrally
using a security information and event management system.

TOPIC 1 : INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEM
• Intrusion Detection System in Railway field

• Intrusion detection systems (IDS) for railway systems consist of electronic /

electrical devices or software applications that monitor railway systems
through networks and communications for faulty activity or policy violations.
Any activity or violation is reported or collected centrally using a security
information system that will generate prevention actions and warning sign

instructions or generate automatic security controls.

TYPE OF INTRUSION
DETECTION SYSTEM IN
RAILWAY
• Conventional technologies for ids that are installed to help human guards
such as :-
• Video cameras system @ CCTV
• Sensors ( microwave sensors, electric field sensors, infrared sensors and many more. )
• Modern @ Innovative technologies for ids that are immune to
electromagnetic interference as well as high sensitivity.
• FBG Sensors ( Fiber Optic based )
IDS RAILWAYS
• Conventional technologies
• Track Circuit
• CCTV Surveillance
• Rail Temperature Sensor
• Modern technologies
• FBG [ Fiber Braff Grating ]
• Sensorized mat
• PIES (Platform Intrusion Emergency Stop) for Platform Safety
System
1.2 : PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION – TRACK
CIRCUIT
Most railroads use track circuits to determine which sections of track are
occupied by trains. These devices are actually fairly simple in design, and have
been in use since 1872.

1.2 : PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION - PIES
• PIES uses a series of flexible mounted sensor panels located between running rail in front of platforms and attached a proprietary
strain sensitive cable BLUCOR to these sensor panels and developed electronic circuitry to eliminate environmental effects while
detecting human intrusion.

• PIES was designed to be immune to an electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radio frequency interference (RFI) as well as immune to
environmental effects.

• The motion-sensitive cable (attached to a series of flexible mounted, rigid sensor panels located in rows in front of each station
platform) generates electronic signals in direct response to any motion applied to the sensor panels.

• The signal then will be filtered and monitored for any changes to trigger a notification signal to Train Signalling and Scada via dry
contact.

1.3 PRACTICAL : ACCELERATION MEASUREMENT TRAILS

• Acceleration measurement trails [practical]

• Please download train simulator e.g [Euro Bullet Train]
• Students are need to drive the train according to the speed shown on the screen from
starting point to Final Destination with Score must higher than 300.

1.4 PRACTICAL : EXPERIMENT RESULT AND

DISCUSSION
• Please keep the information related to the below for discussion :-
• Top Speed of the acceleration you have reached
• Lowest speed of the acceleration you have reached
• Number of Speed shown at the screen along the level 1 journey until “FINALLY
DESTINATION”
• Score
