challenges such as inadequate training, social
and cultural isolation, instructional, lack of tim
e, lack of community understanding, and rural
nature of most of the multi-grade settings.

In the views of teachers, in multi-grade
classrooms, the student has no motivation to
study and he/she enjoys limited teacher’s
attention and limited variety of learning met

Academic failure: the teachers stated that in m
ul-ti-grade classrooms, the academic achiev
ements of stu-dents are low due to the lack o
f proper teaching facilities, non-use of new tea

➡️The teacher should know his/her students, Teache
r of a multi-grade class and their experiences, so that
he/she can use strategies which will make learning a
ppealing and effective. The teacher should also be ab
le to recognize, and cater for, the individual differenc
es which exist among the students.

➡️Most teachers, because of their training, position and respon
sibility, assume an important position in the local community. T
he multigrade teacher is no different. The nature of many situa
tions, where a multi-grade school exists, is such that the cooper
ation and assistance of the local community is needed, to impr
ove the quality of the educational services provided by the mul
ti-grade schools.

5.As Social Worker/Counsellor

➡️The multi-grade teacher is often the most welleducat


ed person in the community (in a formal as distinct from
a non-formal sense). As such, he/she plays an important
role as an adviser to students and their families, in a wid
e range of social, and possibly psychological, matters.

6.As Evaluator

➡️One of the roles which a multi-grade teacher must


play, is to monitor the process of the pupil’s learning,
so as to ensure a good quality of education. This req
uires teachers to determine the educational levels of
pupils when they first enter the class, during the sch
ool year, and at the end of it.

• The teacher has a critical role in the training


of parents, and other local community mem
bers, to act as facilitators for student`s learni

• Many government policies, concerning famil


y planning and health care, can be put into pr
actice better with the help of teachers.

• The teacher in the multi-grade class need to


monitor closely the performance of his/her p
upils, and take steps to ensure that they achi
eve the competence needed for permanent l
iteracy and numeracy.

• The atmosphere in a multi-grade classroom i
s more like that of a home, since pupils are n
ot separated by age or grade levels. In this co
ntext, the multi-grade teacher is often seen a
