INTRODUCTION
1.1.DEFINITION OF
VOCABULARY
Hornby (1989: 959) defines vocabulary as:
● Total number of words, which make up a language.
● (Range of) words known to or used by a person, in a
trade, profession, etc.

1.2. TYPES OF VOCABULARY

VOCABULARY VOCABULARY
1.3. IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING VOCABULARY

Without grammar, little can be conveyed; Without vocabulary,

nothing can be conveyed.
-- D. Wilkins

“If language structures make up the skeleton of language, then it is

vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh. An ability to
manipulate grammatical structure does not have any potential for
expressing meaning unless words are used”.
-- J. Hammer

PPP IN TEACHING
VOCABULARY
PRESENTATION, PRACTICE,
PRODUCTION
3.1. WHAT IS PPP IN TEACHING
VOCABULARY?
- PPP stands for Presentation, Practice and Production
o The teacher presents the new vocabulary and explains the form of the
language in a meaningful context.
o The students practise this new vocabulary through controlled activities
such as worksheets or question and answer activities to check
comprehension.
o The students use or produce what they have learned in a
communicative activity such as a role-play, communication game, or
question and answer session.
PRESENTATION PRACTICE PRODUCTION

in class
Play Speed Word Search.

Aim: help the student to discover the use and the

meaning of words

Activity: Give each student or pair of students a

dictionary. When you call out a word, the student(s)
must find the word as quickly as possible. The first
person to call out the correct page number wins the
round.

Age: older children

2. Difficulties and suggestions:

Some factors that caused students' difficulties in learning vocabulary

· The written form is different from the spoken form in English,

· The number of words that students need to learn is exceedingly

large,

· The limitations of sources of information about words

· The complexity of word knowledge.

2. Difficulties and suggestions:
Some suggestions for teachers

· Prepare ways to show meaning

· Keep teaching simple and clear

· Think about how to check students' understanding

· Ask students to tell the meaning before offering the meaning

· Always keep a good dictionary by your side in case a student asks a word you are not sure about.

· Encourage autonomy in your learners
