 What is a Northern
Coniferous Forest
A forest that grows in regions of the northern hemisphere with cold temperatures. Made
up mostly of cold tolerant coniferous species such as spruce and fir.

It is also called boreal/ taiga forests in Russia

It is commonly known as the “winter forest”

Location of the Temperate forest

● It can be found more precisely at 50

degrees to 60 degrees latitudes.
● The northern coniferous forest
biome occupies an extensive area in
the Pacific northwest of America.
● It extends completely across Canada
● even into some parts of Alaska
 Climate of the Northern Coniferous forest

- cold, long, snowy winters
- warm and humid summers
- well-defined seasons, at least
four to six frost-free months
-The average temperature in
winter is -20°C.

summer is usually ranges around

Flora in the Northern
Coniferous forest
-The weather is severely cold

-This climate controls the growth of the flora.

-This forest mainly consists of trees like,

pines, spruce, cedar, hemlock and lash

-The trees all look similar as a result of the

climate

-These plants are able to survive in these

harsh winters because they shut off the
process of photosynthesis

-The leaves on these trees are thin needles

like to aid in transpiration.

The animals in this forest have thick fur to insulate them

against the frigid winters

while others hibernate to endure the cold

some migrate to warmer temperatures.

Grizzly bears, reindeer, musk and foxes are just a few

examples animals
