Industrial Psychology

• Introduction: There has been a

marked increase in the application of
psychological methods and techniques to the
solution of many human problems in industrial
units and business during the recent past. This
increased reliance upon psychology in various
organizations, probably, is the consequence of
two major factors.
Industrial Psychology
The first is that the importance of human
beings has received wider recognition in
industry as well as business. Secondly many
developments have taken place in the field of
industrial psychology which has resulted in
potential applications of this science to
numerous human problems in industry and
business.
Industrial Psychology
•Industrial psychology as the name indicates is
that branch of psychology which deals with
human behavior under industrial circumstances.
•According to Blum, psychologist, industrial
psychology is simply the application or extension
of psychological facts and principles to the
problems concerning human relations in
business and industry.
Industrial Psychology
• Smith has defined Industrial psychology as the
study of conduct of those who do mental and
physical labour for the means to live.
• In short it can be said that Industrial psychology
is that branch of psychology which deals with
human behavior under business and industrial
conditions, and in which research is carried on
concerning the behavioral problems that arise
in an industrial environment.
DEFINITIONS
OF
INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY
• The meaning of the term may be clearer from the following
definitions.
• 1. “Industrial psychology resolves itself into an analytical study of
the intellect involved in the task of administration and
organization as also of the mental and physical ability required
for manual and operative labour. It further embodies a scientific
research into the relative efficiency of the varied methods of
performing manual operations for the better utilization and least
waste of efforts”.
J.R.Batlibi.
DEFINITIONS OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

• 2. “Industrial psychology may be defined as the

study of people as individuals and in groups and of
the relationship between individuals and groups”.
Thomas W.Harrell

3. “Industrial Psychology is simply the application or

extension of psychological facts and principles to
the problems concerning human beings operating
within the context of business and industry”
Blum and Naylor
DEFINITIONS OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Thus it is apparent from the study of the above definition that:

(a) It is the systematic study of human behavior and it is concerned with

the discovery of information relating to human behavior at work.

(b) It is concerned with the application of information about human

behavior to the various problems of industrial human life.

 (c) The main aim of industrial psychology is research rather than

administration and the personnel administration is the application of
such research.

(d) It studies the varied methods of performing manual operations for the
better utilization and the least waste of efforts through human
engineering.
APPLICATION OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHLOGY IN INDUSTRY

Since Industrial Psychology is the study of

people at work and is concerned with the
entire spectrum of human. Its scope is the
entire process of management dealing with
people at work.
APPLICATION OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHLOGY IN INDUSTRY

There is hardly a field in industry where

human understanding is not required, there is
hardly a problem in business where human
aspect is not involved and hence there is hardly
an area in which psychologist cannot play his
role It may be said that management of
personnel nowadays is more a problem of
psychology than of economic.
APPLICATION OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHLOGY IN INDUSTRY

Industrial Psychology is a useful aid to the efficient

management of people at work. The
principles, findings and techniques of industrial
psychology may be applied usefully to the
different areas of management like, Recruitment of
personnel, Selection and placement, Executive development
and training, Promotional schemes, Motivation, Attitude
and morale, Wages and salary administration, Human
Relation, Human Engineering, Accident Prevention.
