Measures Of Position

A measure of position is a method by which the position

that a particular data value has within a given data set
can be identified.
Types of methods

These mesures include:

1) Quartiles
2) Declies and
3) Percentiles.
Quartiles
Quartiles divide a set of observations into four equal parts.
The first quartile, usually labeled Q1 .
The second quartile, usually labeled Q2.
The third quartile, usually labeled Q3.

Note: Q1 can be thought of as the “median” of the lower half of the data
and Q3 the “median” of the upper half of the data.
Again, declies divide a set of observations into 10
equal parts & percentiles divide a set of observations
into 100 equal parts.
For an example, if you get GPA 8th declie at your college.
You could conclude that 80% of the students had a GPA
lower than your and Had 20% a higher GPA.
Location of percentile:

Lp=(n+1)P/100
46 47 49 49 51 53 54 54 55 55 59

Here ,
n=11 & p=25

o First Quartile Q1 :
L25=(n+1)p/100
=(1+1)25/100

=3
o Second Quartile Q2 :
L50=(n+1)P/100
=(11+1)50/100
=6
o Third Quartile Q3 :
L75=(n+1)p/100
=(11+1)75/100
=9
Therefore, the first and third quartile values are located at
position 3 & 9 respectively. The third value in the ordered
array is 49 and the ninth is 55 and this way the median is
located at position 6. The value in the ordered array is 53.
