What is Electromagnetic waves?
 “Electromagnetic waves are waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer
space .

 Electromagnetic waves are formed when an electric field couples with a magnetic
field.

 The magnetic and electric fields of an electromagnetic waves are

perpendicular to each other and to the direction of waves.”
Production of Electromagnetic Waves

 When an electric charge vibrates, the electric field around it changes creating a changing
magnetic field.
 The magnetic and electric fields create each other again
and again.
 An EM wave travels in all directions. The figure only shows
a wave traveling in one direction.
 The electric and magnetic fields vibrate at right angles to the direction the wave travels so it is a
transverse wave
Properties of electromagnetic wave

 All electromagnetic waves are transverse wave.

 They do not require any medium to travel through .

 They travel at the speed of 3x108 ms-1in vacuum.

 They can all be reflected or refracted.

 They can all be emitted or absorbed by matter.

 They all obey the wave equation.

v =f x λ
Where v= speed of wave (m/s)
f = frequency of wave (Hz)
λ = wavelength (m)

 Their frequencies do not change as they pass from one medium to another. However,
both their speed and wavelength will change.

 They carry energy from one place to another.

 They are all of neutral charge as all of them oscillate with electric and magnetic field
perpendicular to each other.
 Overview of Electromagnetic Waves:
Advantages
 Radio Waves: Radio waves are used for communication such as broadcasting
television and radio, communications and satellite transmissions.
  Radio waves are transmitted easily through air.
 They do not cause damage if absorbed by the human body, and they can be reflected
to change their direction.
 By the help of Radio waves we can easily communicate easily in our day to day life.

 Microwaves: Microwaves are used in so many aspects of our life.

 Radar communication is possible using microwaves.
 In Navigation, Microwaves are used.
 Heating & power application device works using Microwaves. Such as: Microwave oven
 Infrared: Infrared (IR) light is used by electrical heaters
 cookers for cooking food, short-range communications like remote controls,
 optical fibers,
 security systems and thermal imaging cameras which detect people in the dark.

 Ultra-violet: UV radiation is widely used in industrial processes and in medical and

dental practices for a variety of purposes, such as killing bacteria, creating fluorescent
effects, curing inks and resins, phototherapy and suntanning.
 Different UV wavelengths and intensities are used for different purposes.

 Gama Ray: Gama ray used in, Sterilize medical equipment.

 Sterilize food (irradiated food)
 Used as tracers in medicine.
 Radio Therapy- In oncology, to kill cancerous cells.
 Gamma-Ray Astronomy.
 X-Ray: The most common form of X-ray used is X-ray radiography, which can be used to help
detect or diagnose:
• Bone fractures.
• Infections (such as pneumonia)
• Calcifications (like kidney stones or vascular calcifications)
• Some tumors.
• Arthritis in joints.
• Bone loss (such as osteoporosis)
• Dental issues.

 There are so many advantages of using Electromagnetic waves in our day to day life.
Disadvantages
 RF radiation has lower energy than some other types of non-ionizing radiation, like
visible light and infrared, but it has higher energy than extremely low-frequency
(ELF) radiation. If RF radiation is absorbed by the body in large enough amounts, it
can produce heat. This can lead to burns and body tissue damage.

 Microwave radiation can heat body tissue the same way it heats food. Exposure to
high levels of microwaves can cause a painful burn. Two areas of the body, the eyes
and the testes, are particularly vulnerable to RF heating because there is relatively
little blood flow in them to carry away excess heat.

 The main disadvantage of visible-light cameras is that they cannot capture images at

night or in low light (at dusk or dawn, in fog, etc.). Without an additional light source,
visible-light cameras cannot produce images in these conditions. - Higher costs due
to the additional lighting required in some conditions.
 Depending on the amount and form of the radiation, as well as on the skin type of the
individual exposed, ultraviolet radiation causes erythema, sunburn, photodamage
(photoaging), photo carcinogenesis, damage to the eyes, alteration of the immune
system of the skin, and chemical hypersensitivity.

 Gamma rays are a radiation hazard for the entire body. They can easily penetrate
barriers that can stop alpha and beta particles, such as skin and clothing. ... Gamma
rays can pass completely through the human body; as they pass through, they can cause
ionizations that damage tissue and DNA.

 Side effects. While X-rays are linked to a slightly increased risk of cancer, there is an

extremely low risk of short-term side effects. Exposure to high radiation levels can have a
range of effects, such as vomiting, bleeding, fainting, hair loss, and the loss of skin and
hair.

 There are so many disadvantages too for using Electromagnetic waves in our day to day
life.
