INTRODUCTION

• It is a clinical examination of the interior of the eye using a direct


ophthalmoscope

• It is done to assess the status of the fundus and to detect the media
opacities
PARTS OF DIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPE
TECHNIQUE

• Introduction
• Inspection
• Know the refrective error of the patient
• Darken the room
• Distant target
• Right hand for right eye and left hand for left eye
• Index finger on the rotating disc
TECHNIQUE…

• Red reflex at ½ meter distance


• Anterior segment examination (+20 D)
• Posterior segment examination---optic nerve head

1. Cup----increased C/D ration


2. Color----pale, NVDs
3. Contour---swelling, myopic disc changes
TECHNIQUE ..

• Follow the four major vascular arcades


• Macula
• Periphery in the four quadrants
