Objective:

● SWBAT learn and comprehend the food pyramid, and balanced diets.
● SWBAT learn primary food groups based on pictures and words.

Task: In three groups the students will work as a team to create a food pyramid using the pictured cards
based on prior knowledge. Next, teachers will show the actual food pyramid, and teach students about
balanced diets. After, the students in their teams will recreate food pyramids, based on what they have
learned. The second time creating the food pyramid students will use the worded cards.
Sections of the Food Pyramid
1. Fats, Sugars, Oil’s
2. Dairy Groups
3. Protein/ Poultry Groups
4. Vegetable Group
5. Fruit Group
6. Wheat Group

Facts about the food pyramid
● Represents amount of servings that should be eaten each day from food groups
● First pyramid was made in Sweden, and adopted by U.S. in 1992
● Has been replaced by “my plate”
● Ideal daily diet: grains: 6 ounces daily, vegetables: 2.5 cups daily, fruits: 2 cups
daily, milk: 3 cups daily, and meats/beans: 5.5 ounces daily.
