INTRODUCTION TO
MY PLAN

This plan will…

Set the standard for leadership. Balance that with your own
leadership style and traits, this plan will help you develop and
grown! Assess your strengths and weaknesses to grow into the
leader you know you can be.

WEEK 1: FIND
YOUR PURPOSE
Kouzes and Posner quote 1

“All of us are born leaders. We all have leadership qualities

ingrained. All that we need is polishing them up and
bringing them to the forefront. (Kouzes and Posner 2017,
p. 12)

* Are leaders born or taught? If we are all born leaders, why

must we all be taught and we cannot all be leaders, there must
be followers. But to be a good leader you must first be a good
follower. The world of leadership is a divine paradox we seek
to concur!

* Leaderships is not about solving the paradox it is about self-

development and how YOU can be better. How are YOU
going to polish up?
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE
(CONT’D)
Assess your
personality type.
How do you conduct
Kouzes and Posner quote 2: yourself (regardless
of your position) are
Model the Way Titles are granted, but it’s your behavior you a leader?
that earns you respect.
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 13)

* Too many of us fall into the trap “If I was the boss, I
would do this, If only I had X or Y then things would be so
much better around here”. This simply isn’t true; everyone
can influence their own environment. The energy and
behavior you carry to conduct yourself can be infectious to
the group! Use this power for good, rather than evil!
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE (CONT’D)

” Deeds are far more important than

words when constituents want to
determine how serious leaders really
are about what they say. Words and
deeds must be consistent.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, p. 14)

* Failing to keep your word will cause your team to lose

faith in their leader. Constituents will even challenge your
authority and push the boundaries of their role. Further
hurting your team's faith in you.
TO DO today:
1. Recognize you have strengths and
weaknesses.
2. Write Thank-You note to your team for
their dedication.
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR

WEEK 2: LEARNING IS DOING (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 6

“If a leader displays no passion for a cause, why should anyone else? Furthermore,
being upbeat, positive, and optimistic offers people hope that the future can be
brighter.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 36)

* No one wants to work for gloomy, depressing person. No one wants to work in that
environment. Remember, the vibe you put out has an influence on the group! Leader
from the front, lead by example.

WEEK 2: LEARNING IS
DOING
• Kouzes and Posner quote 7:

“People expect leaders to have a sense of direction and a concern for

the future of the organization. Simply put, says first-year attorney
Sarah Holden: “If leaders want to rely on others to follow them, the
leader needs to tell them where they are going, and get everyone
heading in the same direction.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 37)

* Using foresight proves you are planning ahead, looking out for everyone,
and comes with experience. If in uncharted territory this is an opportunity to
prove to your team your knowledge and whit you have earned through
experience. SHOW THEM WHY YOU’RE A LEADER!

WEEK 1 AND WEEK 2
“WRAP-UP”:
What have we learned? Are you not entertained?

Focus on the theme of leadership. What have we learned? Think of Alex or

Matt Mendez, what makes them such good leaders? Well, first they are
competent. They have a solid foundation of skill for us to trust their
judgement. Why do we trust their judgement and decisions? They have
forward-thinking, their experience and skills give us confidence in their
decisions. They are honest and inspiring; Alex is the master of giving us
bad news but rallying us up to tackle it head on! He leads by example with
this commitment and passion for our mission. They trust in us and are
happy to give us credit and praise. Their title was not only granted but
earned through their behavior and respect!

WEEK 3:
MODEL THE WAY
• Kouzes and Posner quote 9:

“Before you can become a credible leader – one who
connects “what you say” with “what you do” – you first
have to find your authentic voice, the most genuine
expression of who you are. If you don’t find your voice,
you’ll end up with a vocabulary that belongs to someone
else, mouthing words written by some speechwriter or
mimicking the language of some other leaders who is
nothing like you at all.”

WEEK 3: MODEL THE WAY (CONT’D)
• Kouzes and Posner quote 10(from this module’s assigned
readings):

“To speak out, however, you have to have

something to speak about. To stand up for
your beliefs you stand for. To walk the

you want to say.

(CONT’D)

Add’l Quote 4:
“Even someone as hardcore as Odysseus,
aint always in the driver seat! Sometimes
he’s behind the wheel, other times hes riding
bitch in the God’s whip” (Thug Notes
Odyssey, 3:13)

* You can only prepare for some much! So

prepare for the unexpected and roll with the
punches!
WEEK 3 AND WEEK 4 “WRAP-UP”:
Model the Way! Think about how your actions and word affect your leadership. Learn your own voice and style. Don’t strive to be a
cheap imitation of someone successful, be better than them in your own way! You can do this by setting the example and listening to
feed back. Have some humility and learn from the mistakes and the victories. Represent the values of yourself, listen to yourself so
you can easily define those values! If you don’t know what your ‘standing for’ your will surly fall.

Think about what is important to you. Why is that important? How far are you willing to go to stick by that? Finding and defining
something that important will resonate with your team and they will follow you anywhere, even to their death like Odysseus’ men!
(okay will maybe not that far, but maybe!)

A. One of my favorite quotes is from the Thug Notes video. No matter powerful or witty Odysseus was in the story, he still could
not win everything. He wasn’t perfect but he was persistent! Where would he be if he just gave up? That story would SUCK!
B. “Even someone as hardcore as Odysseus, ain’t always in the driver seat! Sometimes he’s behind the wheel, other times he’s
riding bitch in the god’s whip.” (Thug Notes Odyssey, 3:13)

C. After every experience, GOOD OR BAD, think about what you can learn from them. You know learning things the hard way is
a way of life, and everyone faces it! You are not facing something someone else hasn’t over come. Don’t let that suck you into
the black hole, turn it into something powerful that drives you!
WEEK 5: INSPIRE AND CREATE VISION
• Kouzes and Posner quote 15:

“Feeling a strong sense of purpose—particularly Add’l Quote 5, on Capt. Cook:

TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:
The quote I choose this week was from my teammate Kate Layne because I found it to be a good understanding of the
martial and a witty insight to how she viewed Captain Cooks actions!

“He [Captain Cook] recognized what his crew was causing [diseases] so we started bringing everyone on board and not
letting other people get on board to try and separate it. So, by trying to separate it he was trying to save both
populations; which is a great example of a leader! But at the same time, he spread syphilis and killed thousands so”
(Kate Layne, 22:10-22:40)

I like how she addressed Captain Cook as a good leader, realizing what was happening without completely
understanding the science behind it. He made the best decision he could in that terrible situation. Her comment goes
to show the responsibility a leader holds as well! A mistake was made, and it cost lives. That does not just go to the
crewmen, but the responsibility is help with their leader. Without much information in the time there was little he
could do or have prepared but trying to make the best of the worst situation was all he could do.
Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.
Experience is the only way to move forwards.

learner.
WEEK 5 AND WEEK 6 “WRAP-UP”:
Weeks 5 and 6 are about inspiring your team, creating vision, and looking to help others. This idea is to help your team and without it, your
team will remain stagnant. Being uninspired will drop product quality, creating vision helps everyone understand the ‘big picture and work
together towards the same goal.
“ This insight helped me appreciate how important it is for leaders to be constantly on the lookout for opportunities for improvement, to
identify and challenge systems that are not working well and foster an environment where everyone is open to sharing new ideas. (Kouzes
and Posner 2017, pg. 151)
Looking to help others will set the example required of a leader. As you help others, they will help each other, and even help you! Everyone has
something to teach another. Some work environments I have been in kept a ‘knowledge is power’ mentality and would only help if absolutely
necessary or directly asked. This may have helped them feel empowered but also made the team less efficient and less productive. If everyone
were to learn from each other and help each other the results would double! The proof is in the pudding I have seen it on highly
efficient/productive teams. It seems now we are constantly trying to find that team again. We don’t have those members anymore and need to
develop our new team to feel as inspired and accomplished as that old team!
It's difficult, if not impossible, to imagine going to a place you've never experienced, either actually or vicariously. Taking a journey into your
past before exploring your future makes the trip much more meaningful.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 101)
It is not about getting back to that team with only that goal in mind. Appreciate the journey and build that relationship with the team. This
makes everyone feel whole, enjoy what we do, and enjoy who we do it with. This will help everyone trust more and be willing to be vulnerable
to learn and take risks together.
WEEK 7: CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
Add’l Quote 11, from Virginia Woolf:

“One can only show how one came to hold whatever opinion one
does hold. One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing
their own conclusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices,
the idiosyncrasies of the speaker” (Woolf 1928, pg. 3)

* Remember your opinions and thoughts are your own. They

come from your culture and your experiences. Let others know
where you come from in your approach but be flexible in trying
to understand others.
TO DO (in a future…) today:
1. Challenge the Process by reading into
the reasons WHY are doing something.
2. Challenge the Process by viewing this
from a different perspective and how we
can improve on it.
WEEK 7: CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
(CONT’D)
Add’l Quote 12, from Virginia Woolf:
“And what holds them together in these rare instances of survival (I was thinking of WAR AND
PEACE) is something that one calls integrity, though it has nothing to do with paying one's bills
or behaving honorably in an emergency. What one means by integrity, in the case of the novelist,
is the conviction that he gives one that this is the truth”. (Woolf 1928, pg. 40)

* Integrity is not doing the right thing so you can benefit from it. Simply hold yourself
accountable and maintain integrity because it’s the right thing to do. Others will see this and
follow suit. But do it even when no one is around. That is more about who you are and being
honest with yourself.

TO DO today:
• Kouzes and Posner quote 19
1. Challenge the Process by reading into

•Add’l Quote 13, from Arnold van Gennep:

“The natural boundary might be a sacred rock, tree,

river, or lake which cannot be crossed or passed without
the risk of supernatural sanctions. –more often the
boundary is marked by an object-a stake, portal, or

TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:
I pulled this quote from my teammate Aleccia for a few reasons. It gave me a different perspective
into a similar quote I also references. I like the idea’s it brought up and added to our discussion.
“He discusses the ceremonial mountain pass of the world and talks about various offerings to the place and spiritual. Going
through all these experiences and crossing over. -- That is how I interpreted it. Opening doors and taking that into a religious
sense. Crossing over into a spiritual sense where God or whoever is calling you to do [something]. “God calls me to do this”
you are stepping into that new experience” – Aleccia 07:58 - 09:42

Her religious perspective and sense of purpose was a great way to correlate the examples
of Rites, tradition, and the way we all interact with them. I felt I spent more time trying
to put myself into Van Gennep shoes more so than putting his teachings into my personal
life. Her unique perspective sparked more interested and more in-depth conversation.
WEEK 8: ENABLE OTHERS TO
ACT
 Kouzes and Posner quote 20

“ There’s an African proverb that advises, “never

test the depth of the water with both feet.”–
Leaders should dream big but start small. – To get
people to do the things they have never been done
before, you make progress incrementally,” (Kouzes
and Posner 2017, pg. 172-173)

*This is very important to you! Small victories gives

you the sense of accomplishment. Being able to
look back and see a long list of things accomplished
feels good, so build around that! Celebrate the
little victories to work toward the big goals.
•Add’l Quote 14, from Arnold van Gennep:

“…the door is the boundary between the foreign and

domestic worlds in the case of an ordinary dwelling,
between the profane and sacred worlds in the case of a
temple. Therefore, to cross the threshold is to unite
oneself with a new world.”
•(Van Gennep 1961, pg. 7)

•As a leader it is important to understand others.

When becoming a leader your must pass through
the 3 stages. Leave/Separate from your old self.
Transition and open-up to growth and development.

Use that to your advantage to motivate your team

them a sense of purpose, individuality, and

WEEK 8: ENABLE
OTHERS TO ACT
(CONT’D)
•Add’l Quote 16, from Arnold van Gennep:
“Life itself means to separate and to be reunited, to change form and
condition, to die and to be reborn. It is to act and to cease, to wait and to
rest, and then to begin acting again, but in a different way.(Van Gennep
1961, pg. 189)

• “Life itself means to separate and to be reunited” – we

are in a constant state of change and adaptation
throughout life. Every aspect of our lives shifts through
time; professionally, politically, spiritually, physically, and
emotionally. Take these opportunities to grow forward.
Look for every chance you get to improve. Don’t be
afraid of failure; trial and error is doing the best you can.
I’d rather live life and think back ‘at least I tried’ rather
than dwell in regret for playing life too safe.
WEEK 7 AND WEEK 8 “WRAP-UP”:
Enable others to act. Motivate them and allow them to leave their mark on their work. Giving your team members a sense of
accomplishment and purpose is vital to high levels of productions, quality, and morale. Think of how low your shop’s morale is? (or was
during 2020 – early 2021) What is the cause of that? A team is a direct reflection of its leadership. What is leadership doing that is
causing ultra-low motivation levels? People are losing a sense of accomplishment, no small victories are celebrated, no sense of
independent decision-making power. Everything is micro-managed, and we cannot make decisions for ourselves. We are not able to
leave our mark and are forced to make decisions with a sense of fear. Are we making the right choice, if this comes back will it be on me
again, can I afford to take a risk? We are not enabled to act but more DISABLED!
“ There’s an African proverb that advises, “never test the depth of the water with both feet.”– Leaders should dream big but start
small. (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 172-173) We are committed to training and gaining experiences to make decisions based on our
expertise but supervision strips us of that, our Rite of Passage to being an NCO was meaningless. When new supervision came in they
saw our high level of productivity with low levels of management involvement. This was now and uncomfortable to them. This would
have been a great opportunity to separate, transition, and integrate into a better organization. Take what we were doing well and
improve on. Rather than that they tested the water with both feet and drove away important team members and demotivated the rest
of us. “ This insight helped me appreciate how important it is for leaders to be constantly on the lookout for opportunities for
improvement, to identify and challenge systems that are not working well, and foster an environment where everyone is open to
sharing new ideas. (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 151)
Take every opportunity to learn and grow from; good or bad.

Kouzes and Posner quote 24

powerfulness and control over their lives. However, as necessary as
enhancing self-determination is, it's insufficient. Without the
knowledge, skills, information, and resources to do a job expertly, and
without feeling competent to execute skillfully the choices required,
people feel overwhelmed and disabled. Even if they have the
resources and skills, there may be times when people don't have
confidence that they're allowed to use them or that they'll be backed
up if things don't go as well as expected. There may be times when
they just lack the self-confidence to do what they know they need to
