INTRODUCTION TO MY PLAN

This plan will… Help me to build up the knowledge of what it takes to be an effective
leader and to help those around me by motivating and inspiring them.
This plan holds the key to bringing about shared values and leading to set an example of
how to teach others to model those values.
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE

Kouzes and Posner quote 1

“All of us are born leaders. We all have

leadership qualities ingrained. All that we
need is polishing them up and bringing them
to the forefront.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, p.
12)
We all take different paths in life that lead us on a journey to what we are
meant to be. On that journey we encounter obstacles that test who we are.
It is up to us to rise to the challenge and unleash what has always been
there.
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR
PURPOSE (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 3 (from this module’s assigned readings):

” Deeds are far more important than words when constituents want to
determine how serious leaders really are about what they say.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, p. 14)
Dreams are only dreams until you make it a reality!!! In order to do that it
acts, and, in those actions, people see how truly motivated you are which in
turn motivates them.

TO DO today:
1. Recognize others.
2. Write Thank-You note to show your
appreciation.
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 2
“Every single personal-best leadership case TO DO:
involved a change from the status quo. Not one • Grow
• Innovate
person achieved a personal best by keeping
• Improve
things the same .”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 16)
Taking those challenging steps toward your
personal best only helps you to extend you
knowledge and exercise your creativity.
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR
PURPOSE (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 4 (from this module’s assigned
readings):
“The more you use The Five Practices of Exemplary
Leadership, the more likely it is that you’ll have a positive
influence on other people and the organization.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 21-22)
Consideration is the first step…. I think that if you can start
to image incorporating these into your routine you can
make it happen!

TO DO today:
1. Brainstorm on how I can incorporate the
five practices into my leadership routine.
2. Tell my team I appreciate them.
3. Think innovatively.
•TO-DO LIST (for a
FUTURE day):
---Share experiences and
ideas with a peer.
---Talk about “famous
failures” and successes
with my workout buddy.

WEEK 2: LEARNING IS DOING

KOUZES AND POSNER QUOTE 5

“… EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL… THESE EXPERIENCES ARE MUCH MORE SIMILAR THAN THEY ARE DIFFERENT, REGARDLESS OF
CONTEXT.”
(KOUZES AND POSNER 2017, PG.. 25)
IT WASN’T UNTIL THIS CLASS HAD I PUT MY LIFE STORY IN WRITING… AT FIRST, I WAS NERVOUS BUT THEN A CLASSMATE REPLIED WITH A SIMILAR SITUATION. THIS GAVE ME COMFORT AND HELP ME REALIZES I’M NOT ALONE IN MY JOURNEY.
WEEK 2: LEARNING IS
DOING (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 6:

“The majority of people to follow someone willingly, they want a leader

who they believe is honest, competent, inspiring, and forward-looking.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 31)
Among the many traits my old boss had he was inspiring! The picture you
see is of him capturing our faces during the solar eclipse. He always
encouraged us to learn even when it came to things outside of work. He
made work fun but still knew how to motivate us to reach our goals.

1. In what ways does this leader inspire you?

I put this here because this is an instance where my manager inspired me and
now, I have inspiration to uphold in my leadership today.
WEEK 2: LEARNING IS DOING
Kouzes and Posner quote 7

“Credibility Matters.” Kouzes and Posner quote 8

(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 41)
“DWYSYWD: DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU WILL
The most important thing to me is DO.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg..44)
honesty. I have had few times where I
could see that my manager wasn’t being
honest with me and in that moment, I
lost all respect. It was a very
discouraging time in my life, but I moved
forward learning from their mistakes.
WEEK 1 AND WEEK 2 “WRAP-UP”:
A. I covered rising to the challenge with stepping out of the same thing you do to achieve find your leadership success. I
touched base on actions over words and credibility in both chapters. Also, motivation to take on something
challenging so that you can grow. I think it is important to tell you story because you are the only one going through
it. Be genuine and people will follow. If you are true to what you believe you will inspire the people around, you.

B. “The majority of people to follow someone willingly, they want a leader who they believe is honest, competent,
inspiring, and forward-looking.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 31)
“… EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL… THESE EXPERIENCES ARE MUCH MORE SIMILAR THAN THEY ARE DIFFERENT,
REGARDLESS OF CONTEXT.”
(KOUZES AND POSNER 2017, PG.. 25)

C. My earliest memories of having a manager that inspired me was one who always had your back. He was a man of his
word. Not only did he follow through with his promises he made work fun and serious all at the same time. He left an
impression in our store that even after he was gone, we would say “WWBD” or in other words What would Brian do? HE
proved time and time again that he believed in me which in turn help me to believe in myself. I truly feel blessed!
WEEK 3:
MODEL THE WAY

• Kouzes and Posner quote 9

“Who are you? Your leadership journey
begins when you set out to find the answer
and are able to express it.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, pg.. 47)

This was a great question one that as of now I’m still Odyssey synopsis):
working on. My eyes have been opened and my “Yet Odysseus is too proud. His hubris is his

would have been beneficial to the situation.
WEEK 3: MODEL THE WAY (CONT’D)
• Kouzes and Posner quote 10
There went our values
“Leadership is not merely about your ….
values, It’s about the values of your
constituents.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017,
pg.. 61)

I think it is very important for people to

find organizations that align with the

WEEK 3: MODEL THE WAY (CONT’D)

• Kouzes and Posner quote 11

“When leaders seek consensus
around shared values, constituents
are more positive and productive.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 65)
• Odysseus should have used those

within his followers. I have found

us.
TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:

I really appreciated Patricia in our co-mentoring team meeting when taking about Teamwork: what did I do to
lend a hand? She Said “Ask if anyone needs help. A genuine want to help people not because I question their
ability to complete things, but she genuinely wants people to know that if they need help to let her know and
she can help.” (co-mentoring meeting, 1:03)
I was glad to hear her say this because this was something I wanted to express to my group. I wanted my team
to be able to reach out to me even if it was just a question about the class. I wanted them to be able to go
beyond just the co-mentoring meetings if they needed help with anything. Interacting with other peers in a
setting such as this really helps to bring out our shared values and leadership qualities.
WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO TRUST (BUT VERIFY…)

WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO TRUST
• Kouzes and Posner quote 14 (BUT VERIFY…) (CONT’D)
“The feedback process strikes at a tension between two basic human needs: the need to learn and
grow versus the need to be accepted just the way you are. … harmless suggestions can leave a person
felling angry, anxious, poorly treated, or profoundly threatened. ” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg..82)

• Had an encounter with feedback given to me this week. It

was surprising to hear because I thought I was at least
trying to do everything right, but you never know how
others perceive you based on the things you do. It is a
necessary part of continuous improvement.
3. Describe an instance when this leader/colleague failed. How

WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO TRUST (BUT VERIFY…) (CONT’D)

Add’l Quote 4 (from THUG NOTES or another Odyssey video):

“Who was to blame for O-diddy bein gone for so long? Was it his own
doing since he blinded Poseidon’s son?
(THUG NOTES, counter number 3:36).
This I feel like is a good reflection question for Odysseus to have asked. I
believe that if he would have reflected on his choices while he was away,
he would have been able to learn from his mistakes.
WEEK 3 AND WEEK 4 “WRAP-UP”:

The main themes for weeks 3 and 4 are shared values and setting the example. We began week 3 in learning about
the importance of not only your values but the values of our constituents. Week 4 we go into greater detail on how
to live the shared values and what that looks like when setting the example to help lead your team.

“When leaders seek consensus around shared values, constituents are more positive and productive.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 65)
“The feedback process strikes at a tension between two basic human needs: the need to learn and grow versus the need to be accepted
just the way you are. … harmless suggestions can leave a person felling angry, anxious, poorly treated, or profoundly threatened. ”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg..82)

My most positive example of seeking consensus was when Covid-19 first happened. We all wrapped up in such an uncertain time where
things were changing everyday. It was hard to keep the partners positive and happy with all the change… but we eventually had time given
to us so that we could sit down and do group check-in which also involved role play and troubleshooting our new roles. This helped with
bringing shared values of all partners to light and help the feel apart of the change.
I have always tried to keep an open mind when it comes to feedback, but I did receive feedback recently that somewhat broke my spirit.
Feedback can be a messy thing and to the best of my ability I thought I was trying to do right by my team. I now have taken that feedback
and I am all the better for it… giving me the strength to carry on and be all that I can for my team.
WEEK 5: INSPIRE AND CREATE VISION
• Kouzes and Posner quote 15:

“Express Your Passion… Envisioning the

future requires you to connect with your
deepest feelings. You have to find something
that’s so important that you’re willing to put in
the time, suffer the inevitable setbacks, and
make the necessary sacrifices.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, pg.. 104)
I whole heartedly agree that you need to be
passionate about what you are doing in order
to inspire others. In Capt. Cook’s case I think the
fact that he took such a risk and brought back Capt. Cook:
something great and lasted generations speaks Cook sailed into this void in a small

others to do it in the process.

I loved this quote because I too have
been going on adventure and I don’t
want the exploring to stop.
TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:

“Basically, the connection I was trying to draw was that it is good to learn from
experience or other people’s experience.” (Kamron, 17:57)

In this quote Kamron was speaking to Capt. Cook’s third voyage and the route that
was take was different then those in the past due to the experience previous people
had and how many failures there were. Here I feel that it is important to learn from
others experiences whether it be successes or failures. I think that Kamron’s ability to
take this into consideration leads me to believe he would do great in finding ways to
inspire and create a vision from past experiences if not his own.
WEEK 6: LOOK TO HELP
OTHERS
“Teamwork makes the dream work.”
-John Maxwell

This I quote mainly taken because I say it on the daily, in which I

had to look up the original owner. One day a customer said this as
he was leaving the drive thru and I stuck with me. For me, in order
to make teamwork I first start by helping others and in doing so
when others help back, I praise their efforts and belt out the old

WEEK 5 AND WEEK 6 “WRAP-UP”:
A. One of the main themes of theses weeks were to inspire and create the vision by expressing your
passion, create a sense of purpose and belonging, and keep on exploring. The other theme was
looking to help others by encouraging teamwork, going above and beyond, and animating the
vision.

B. “Express Your Passion… Envisioning the future requires you to connect with your deepest feelings. You have to
find something that’s so important that you’re willing to put in the time, suffer the inevitable setbacks, and make
the necessary sacrifices.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.. 104)

C. For my future self I hope that you will continue to express your passion in order to help others no
matter how small the task. I hope you will still strive to explore new territories with friends and create
those close relationship.
WEEK 7: CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
Virginia Woolf:

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is

to write fiction.”(Woolf 2007, pg. 3)

This to me was such a simple yet powerful quote that has

reverberated throughout her writings. I found that it is a great quote
that shines light on the circumstances of women at that time. To me I
felt it to be an eye opener to be able to break through what is
expected and raise the standard to create a new normal and that’s
why I chose the picture/quote.

WEEK 7: CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
(CONT’D)
Virginia Woolf:
“What were the conditions in which women lived?”(Woolf
2007, pg. 23)

With this weeks 360 Questions I found this quote only

fitting to challenge what it is that we do in our daily lives
to encourage women to strive toward the life they want
to live.

• Kouzes and Posner quote 19

“To challenge the process, you must search for opportunities by

seizing the initiative and look outward for innovative ways to TO DO today (…a future today):

perspective and empowerment that you need to continue.
WEEK 7: CHALLENGE
THE PROCESS (CONT’D)
Arnold van Gennep:

“But not so long ago the passage from

one country to another, from one
province to another within each
country… was accompanied by various
formalities.”(Van Gennep 1961, pg. 15)
Crossing borders or even through
doorways we have come a long way
from what use to be. Time have
changed, but it is always beneficial to
know how things were in the past.
TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:

“Weird depressive limbo” (Kamron, 17:00)

This quote was taken when we had to speak about our own rites of passage and
Kamron shared with us his transformative experience of going to a university. I
picked this quote because it shared a deeper level of who Kamron is based off his
first experiences with attending university. He shared is depressive state to which
he chose to push through and continue with his higher education. This shows me
his perseverance as a leader in his own life and I know he can translate that to
any job he finds himself in.
WEEK 8: ENABLE OTHERS TO
ACT
Kouzes and Posner:

“To get People to do things they have never done before,

you make progress incrementally… You break the long
journey down into milestones… you move step by step
creating a sense of forward momentum.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, pg. 173)
I found this quote encouraging. I am a person that takes on
too much at once and for my own personal growth, this
quote helps me to take a step back and manage those steps
one at a time. In the future it will help me to do the same for
someone else.
Arnold van Gennep:
“In the same way, whenever an
Orthodox Jew passes through
the main door of a house, a
finger of his right hand touches
the mezuzah, … (Van Gennep
1961, pg. 24)

I have known this to be tradition from

family and friends who are Jewish but to
have this be descriptive in relation to the
material, transcends the rite of this passage.
I thought this was a cool thing to learn and
now I will not be able to pass through
another doorway without looking at it the
same way.
WEEK 8: ENABLE OTHERS TO ACT
(CONT’D)

Arnold van Gennep:

“The rite of eating and drinking together… is clearly
a rite of incorporation, of physical union, and has
been called a sacrament of communion.”(Van
Gennep 1961, pg.. 29)
Coming from a Polish background food is a must, eating and drinking
together was a big thing in my family. My Polish Grandmother was the
homemaker, cooked the best foods imaginable, but sadly after she passed this
tradition went with her as my family is spread out across different cities and
states. We don’t get to have family time or big extravagant holidays as we did.
This last Thanksgiving, we finally were all able to come together for a family
gathering which hasn’t happened in over a decade. The picture is in reference
to a joke I sent my aunt because we were also dining with her husband’s
family which they are, let’s just say conservative to put it mildly, and well we
are who we are. The picture speak volumes!
WEEK 8: ENABLE OTHERS TO ACT (CONT’D)

Arnold van Gennep:

“Birth, puberty, marriage, and death are, in
all cultures, marked by ceremonies which
may differ in detail but are universal in
function.” (Van Gennep 1961, pg. last of PDF)
This last detail of the PDF was this quote which I felt
was only fitting to bring things full circle. To me I find
that even though we all have different ways of doing
things in life, at the end of the day its towards the same
goal. This makes me think back to shared visions and
how our journey together helps to encourage others to
get to where it is that we want to be.
WEEK 7 AND WEEK 8 “WRAP-UP”:
A. The first theme of this week is to challenge the process in which we can raise our standards, ask insightful
questions, and cross those boarders into the unknown. The second them of this week was to enable others to
act and we can do this by working incrementally, creating those bonds even if its over food, and understand
we are all here for the same reason.

B. “To challenge the process, you must search for opportunities by seizing the initiative and look outward for innovative ways to
improve.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 168)
“Birth, puberty, marriage, and death are, in all cultures, marked by ceremonies which may differ in detail but are universal in
function.” (Van Gennep 1961, pg. last of PDF)

C. I think for my future self I would like to be able to challenge the process and hone my skills of asking
insightful questions. With all that has been going on in this pandemic I have been lucky enough to have visited
my family in a different state. Also because of the pandemic I have limited my interaction with people, and this
includes just seeing the people I work with outside of work. This has enabled us to create a bond over working
on our health outside since we can no longer go to gyms. We have been able to take baby steps to ensure we are
sticking to a routine and we are experiencing results. I feel that these relationships we have created help us to
rely on one another at work.

“Validate that right or wrong, whether they have a difference in opinion

it’s validating your emotions and your concerns that were brought
forward.”(Co-mentoring meeting, 15:08)
In this instance we were sharing about how therapeutic it is for these
victims to share their stories. I appreciated Tricia using the word validate,
because it supports what they went through and the fact that it is their
truth. I think that in using the words she did means that she would be able
to provide support when it comes to listening as a leader should. Giving
that undivided attention is a great gift.

“The foundation of gift-giving is reciprocity that you haven't given

me a gift you've given me an obligation.”
(Sheldon Copper, 00:59)

I thought this was funny. Sheldon Cooper always knows just

what to say! We learned that gift giving holds a certain power
over us as the recipients. Sheldon states exactly that it is an
obligation and know he has too gift in return.
WEEK 9 AND WEEK 10 “WRAP-
UP”:
I think the main theme of this week readings was to be able to demonstrate an idea that can lead to
endless possibilities and opportunities. In Africa this looks like people presenting something they
call Ubuntu. We cycle through these rich in counters with others in the world as we navigate how
to survive.
I believe that we thrive off the kindness and help from others in this life and it is up to you on how
you reciprocate that.
Boyd Varty:
“Ubuntu: I am because of you. Or, people are not people without other people. (Boyd Varty, counter/timer: 11:28)
“Extraordinary performance isn’t possible unless there’s a strong sense of shared creation and shared
responsibility.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.197)

We are creatures that crave social interactions, so I believe that those

interactions need to posses the Ubuntu spirit. I think that if we remember ideas
this this then we could make things better. I hope to posses the best spirit in
everything that I do in order to create the best experiences in this life.
Possibilities Are Endless
Week 11: Encourage Initiative
Add’l Quote 23, from one of our additional readings (Mauss, Van Gennep, Woolf,
etc.) or one of our assigned videos:
“Yet Woolf does not despair. On the final page of her book she offers a vision in
favor of female Shakespeares of the future---not from magic or innate talent by from
working hard to change social and legal circumstances: She conjures the notion
that Judith “would come again if we worked for her, and that so to work, even in
poverty and obscurity, is worth while.”(Woolf, pg. 2)

I think this quote is very encouraging in the sense that it helps build hope for the women
writers of the future. She starts by challenging the process in her working towards social
change and in the process will help other to do the same and for the Shakespears of the
world to come out.

TO DO today:
 Be humble when speaking
with others.
 Say Thanks to every
supportive person.
WEEK 11 CONT’D:
ENCOURAGE INITIATIVE
Add’l Quote 24, from one of our additional readings
(Mauss, Van Gennep, Woolf, etc.) or one of our assigned
videos:
“ If Africa has a gift to share, it's a gift of a more
collective society. And while it's true that ubuntu is an
African idea, what I see is the essence of that
value being invented here. (Boyd Varty, 12:18)

I picked this quote as a reminder that ideas such as

Ubuntu from Africa doesn’t have to stay in Africa. This
is an idea that should be incorporated all over the world.
I think that as we witness these things it is our job like it
is Varty’s to share what he has learned and past it on.

stories that put a human face on values.” (Kouzes and

The picture is of my coworker Jacinda, who just won partner of the
quarter. I was happy to see all her hard work and training pay off. I
wanted to be involved and show my support as I was one of the
supervisors who helped her along the way. Supporting partners
through training and eventually promotion like Jacinda is a great
experience. TO DO today:

WEEK 11 AND WEEK 12 “WRAP-
UP”:

The themes for the weeks slide were to encourage and recognize. We first encourage initiative by pushing
boundaries so that others have the chance to do something great. We incorporate the essence of other values
to help others and we make deep connections to help support our team. As leaders we have the ability to be
involved in the process of building others up and recognizing their hard work. These things help make an
organization worth working for.
“Employees with a best friend at work are seven time more likely to engage fully in their work then those
reporting no such friendships.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg.279)
“Leaders set the tone. When they openly demonstrate the joy and passion they have for their organization,
team members, clients, and even challenges, leaders send a very powerful message to others that it’s
perfectly acceptable for people to make public displays of playfulness.” (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 283)
My personal experience with encouragement and recognition come from having a great team. We have
become great because we are in an environment that give us the room to express ourselves to the fullest. I
wouldn’t be the leader I am today without out the supportiveness of my team and company.
“Big Picture” 12 Week
WOW!!! I am so happy to see this project finished and come to its final form. I must say at the begging of this
project I was intimidated with all that was going to happen, but now reflecting on it, it was a pleasure and I look
forward to what I can create in my next class Leaders in Film. Being able to insert 360 question throughout my
power point has been eye opening. I can see all that I have learned with such rich literature we have encountered in
this class. I was able to evaluate leadership strengths and weaknesses through the stories of Odysseus and Capt.
Cook. I was able to discover strengths of others and how they empowered a movement such as Martin Luther did in
Selma or the ideas of Nelson Mandela. Among the material used in this class I had the opportunity to become close
with my fellow classmate as this is not something we usually get to do in online courses. I had a great experience
getting to know my teammates and I loved the diversity of their views. I think most importantly I had the ability to
show, in this presentation, how far I have come in my leadership journey. Equally I believe there is so much I must
learn. I have no doubt that I will be able to incorporate these tools in my daily life as I have already been able to
asses' situations with a different outlook. I am looking forward to how I can expand my leadership skills and
continually assess myself to become the leader I’ve always wanted to be.
