RHETORICAL

ANALYSIS 3: REVERSE
OUTLINE
Ethan Woosley
Paragraph 1 : Introduction

■ The main idea of this paragraph is to introduce the reader to the source I will be
integrating in my rhetorical analysis. In this paragraph I give details about the authors
that wrote this article, explaining their careers, their publishing history, and their main
claim for writing this article.
■ In this paragraph I include information such as the authors careers, being “Department
of Health in Disasters and Emergencies, the Department of Emergency Medicine, the
Clinical Research Development Unit, or the Department of Nursing,” to give the reader
a sense of ethos. They also listed their publishing history, having this article published
in “Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry.”
Paragraph 2 : Main Claim

■ The main idea of this paragraph is to introduce the claim in more detail to my readers.
Providing background to the way these authors collected their data and giving some
statistics that helped support their claim for the argument.
■ In this paragraph I included the average rates of depression and anxiety of healthcare
workers that these authors found when conducting research. These statistics was very
important to their main claim, being that healthcare workers need mental healthcare to
minimize the risk of getting a mental health problem.
Paragraph 3: Exigence and Supporting
Data
■ The main idea of this paragraph was to explain how the issue in more detail, and how
these authors went about solving this issue. As well with discussing how the authors
solve the issues I also explained about their use of tables and graphs in this article to
support their claim.
■ In this paragraph I included the main claim, helping show the exigence, that later these
authors would try to solve. I explained the ways they did their research to solve this
issue, and explained what parts of the research showed what, for instance the tables and
graphs showed the similarities between each country mental health rates.
Paragraph 4: Different Audiences

■ The main idea of this paragraph is to look into the intended audience that these authors
proposed this article for, as well as the implied audience for this article.
Paragraph 5: Argumentation Style

■ The main idea of this paragraph was to explain the style of argumentation these authors
used for this article, along with explaining the ways their argument appeals to the
readers.
■ In this paragraph I use their main claim for writing this argument as the claim, and
support that claim with the grounds, being the evidence that supports the claims. The
warrant was used to support the grounds, having the authors find that 4 countries have
similar trends of mental health issues among healthcare workers. The backing is the
implied information the authors expect the readers to know, being the idea that nobody
has experience with this virus. I then go into explaining how there argument appeals the
readers ethos and logos.
Paragraph 6: Issues in this Article

■ The main idea of this paragraph is to explain the problems and errors the authors made
when conducting their research for this article. There limitations were seen to have
minor impact on the data and results of the research.
■ In this paragraph I list the problems the authors ran into when conducting research and
explained how these problems may have impacted the results of the data. Although the
data might have had minor problems, the idea that the authors where arguing was still
being supported in a major way.
