Use of Passive

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the

action. It is not important or not known, however, who
or what is performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my
bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.

Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active

voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I
do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).
 Form of Passive

subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)

Example: A letter was written.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice,
note the following:
the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the
passive sentence
the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past
participle)
the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the
passive sentence (or is dropped)
 Examples of Passive 
Present
a. Simple Present
Active : S+V1(+-s/es)
My mother waters the plants every day.
Passive : S+be(is,am,are)+being+V3
The plant are watered by mother every
day.
b. Present continuous
Active : S+be1 (is,am,are)+V-ing
They are painting the building.
Passive : S+be1(is,am,are) +being+V3
The bulding is being painted.
c. Present Perfect
Active : S+have/has+V3
Someone has stolen her wallet.
Passive : S+have/has+been+v3
Her wallet has been stolen.
d. Present Perfect Continuous
Active: S+have/has+been+V-ing
The boy have been washing the car
Passive: S+have/has+benn+being+V3
The car has been being washed by the
boy
 Past
a. Simple past
Active: S+V2
The goverment built the bridge .
Passive: S+be2 (was,were)+V3
The bridge was built by the government
last year.
b. Past Continuous
Active: S+be2 (was,were)+V-ing
They were eating lunch when we came.
Passive: S+be2 (was,were)+being+V3
The lunch was being eaten when we
came.
c. Past Perfect
Active :S+had+V3
They had send box before we
checked.
Passive: S+had+been+V3
The box has been sent before we
checked it.
d. Past Perfect Continuous
Active: S+had+been+V-ing
Rita had been eating the apple
Passive: S+had+been+being+V3
The pie had been being eaten by
Rita
 Future
 a. Simple Future
Active: S+will/shall+V1
PNJ will build a new building
Passive: S+will/shall+be+V3
A new building will be built
by PNJ
 b. Future Continuous
Active: S+will/shall+be+V-ing
John will be training the bear
for the royal show
Passive: S+will/shall+be+being+V3
The bear will be trained by John
for the royal show
 c. Future Perfect
Active: S+will/shall+have+V3
They will have done this excercise
by five
Passive: S+will/shall+have+been+V3
This exercise will have been done by
five
 d. Future Perfect Continuous
Active:S+will/shall+have+been+V-ing
Jean will have been deleting the
file.
Passive:S+will/shall+have+been+being
+V3
The file will have been being deleted
by Jean.
 Past Future
a. Past Future
Active:S+would/should+V1
They would clean the car if we
wanted to
Passive: S+would/should+be+V3
The car would be cleaned if we
wanted to
b. Past Future Continous
Active: S+would/should+be+V-ing
He would be cutting the tree if it’s
necessary
Passive:S+would/should+be+being+V3
The tree would be being cutted if it’s
necessary
c. Past Future Perfect
Active: S+would/should+have+V3
I should have mailed the letters early
Passive:S+would/should+have+been+V3
The letters should have been mailed
earlier.
d. Past Future Perfect Continuous
Active:S+would/should+have+been+V-
ing
The kid would have been coloring the
image.
Passive:S+would/should+have+been+bei
ng+V3
The image would have been
being colored by the kid.
