DIFFERENT TYPES OF

WOUNDS
DR. JAIMENITO C. GO
Types of Wounds
 Non-penetrating wounds: These are
usually the result of blunt trauma or
friction with other surfaces; the
wound does not break through the
skin, and may include:
Types of Wounds
 1.) Lacerations – Injury where
tissue is cut or torn. Lacerations may
be deep or shallow, long or short,
and wide or narrow. Most
lacerations are the result of the skin
hitting an object, or an object hitting
the skin with force.
Types of Wounds
 2.) Abrasions – Injury where a
superficial layer of tissue is removed.
Abrasion is a wound caused by
superficial damage to the skin, no deeper
than the epidermis. It is less severe than a
laceration, and bleeding, if present, is
minimal. Mild abrasions, also known as
grazes or scrapes, do not scar or bleed,
but deep abrasions may lead to the
formation of scar tissue.
Types of Wounds
 3.) Contusions – Injuries resulting
from a forceful blow to the skin and
soft tissue, however leaving the
outer layer of skin intact.
Types of Wounds
 4.) Avulsions – Injuries where a
section of tissue is torn off, either
partially or in total. In partial
avulsions, the tissue is elevated but
remains attached to the body. A total
avulsion means that the tissue is
completely torn from the body with
no point of attachment.
Types of Wounds
 5.) Concussions - damage to the
underlying organs and tissue on
head with no significant external
wound.
Types of Wounds
 Penetrating wounds: These result
from trauma that breaks through the
full thickness of skin; reaching down
to the underlying tissue and organs,
and includes:
Types of Wounds
 1.) Stab wounds - A stab wound is a specific
form of penetrating trauma to the skin that
results from a knife or a similar pointed object
that is "deeper than it is wide".
Types of Wounds
 2.) Skin cuts or incised wounds -
incised wounds are caused by a
clean, sharp-edged object such as a
knife, razor, or glass splinter.
Types of Wounds
 3.) Gunshot wounds - is a form of
physical trauma sustained from the
discharge of arms or munitions. The
most common forms of ballistic
trauma stem from firearms used in
armed conflicts, civilian sporting,
recreational pursuits and criminal
activity.
Types of Wounds
 Miscellaneous wounds may include:
Types of Wounds
 1.) Thermal wounds - Burns of skin
or other tissue are caused by fire,
radiant heat, radiation, chemical, or
electrical contact. Thermal burns
result from any external heat source
(flame, hot liquids, heated solid
objects, or hot gases).
Types of Wounds
 2.) Chemical wounds - These result from
contact with or inhalation of chemical
materials that cause skin or lung damage.
Chemical burns are burns to internal or
external organs of the body caused
mainly by chemical substances that are
strong acids or bases (also known as
alkalies).
