What is
Obesity is a condition in which someone has more
body fat than what they should have. Obesity is

or obese. A BMI of 25.0 and 29.9 is considered
overweight, while a BMI of 30 is considered obese.
About 31.7% of children (ages 2-19) and 39.6% of
adults in the U.S. are obese.

Causes of
Obesity is caused by many factors, not just one factor alone.
The causes of obesity in children are like those in adults.

Obesity
Obesity is caused by poor nutrition, irregular sleeping routines,
and unhealthy lifestyles. Environmental factors can affect
obesity, especially for children. What children are given to

them affects their food choices that they make and their
physical activities. Obesity can occur genetically from
generation to generation however, that’s now common.
Overall, obesity is mainly caused by poor behavior choices,
like eating too many unhealthy calories and not exercising
enough.

Risks of
There are many risks that are associated with being obese. Children
who are obese can develop the same health problems found in
adults. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heat

disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep disorders, and some forms
of cancer. Many children who become obese during their life often
become obese adults. Obesity cani have some social and behavioral
side effects, as well. These include depression, having a low self-
esteem, and anxiety. Obesity can create difficulties for social
development. Many teenagers who are obese are often the targets
of bullying. Obesity can even cause eating disorders such as
anorexia and bulimia, especially for preteen girls.

Ways to Prevent
There are many ways to prevent obesity. Taking simple steps everyday can help prevent obesity in the long-run!
• Exercise!
• The CDC recommends at least sixty minutes of physical activity per day. Some activates that you can do

include running, jogging, and playing your favorite sport.
• Follow a healthy-eating plan.
• Focus on low-calorie that have multiple nutritional benefits.
• Avoid saturated fat if possible.
• Eat foods that promote a healthy weight and good health most of the time.
• Know and avoid food traps!

• Identify situations that trigger out-of-control eating.
• Keep a journal to record what you eat, how much you eat, and how you feel.
• Look at patterns after recording your thoughts in your journal.
• Record strategies for handling these types of situations.
• Stay in control of your eating behaviors.
• Monitor your weight regularly.
• People who weigh themselves at least once a week are more likely to keep off excess pounds.
• Monitoring your weight allows you to detect small weight gains before they become big problems.
• Be consistent!
• Always stick to your healthy-weight plan!
• This increases your chances of long-term success.

Breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. About 10% of
the United States doesn’t eat breakfast everyday. Breakfast is
very important because, “breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism
and, thus, helps you burn more calories throughout the day”
(Rush). Eating breakfast allows iyou to become less overweight,
have a low BMI, consume less fat throughout the day, and meet
recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption. It can
even help you have a higher daily calcium and fiber intake. If
you skip breakfast, then you are more likely to be overweight
and consume unhealthy foods.

Lunch
Lunch is very important for everyone. Lunch provides us
energy and nutrients to keep our bodies and brains, “working
efficiently through the afternoon” (Provitamil). The key to
having a nutritious lunch is “getting the right balance of
foods to provide you with thei nutrients you need to stay

healthy” (Provitamil). Eating a nutritious lunch is crucial so


that your blood sugar level increases in the middle of the
day, allowing you to focus for the rest of the afternoon. It
can even allow you to make smarter choices in your eating
habits by skipping unhealthy meals.

Dinner
Dinner, the last meal of the day is also important as well. Since it’s
the last meal of the day, it’s important to eat right because you
won’t be eating again for at least another 10 hours. Eating dinner
ensures that there is a steady supply of glucose for our bodies to
use as fuel while we sleep. Insomnia

is due to low blood sugar
levels in the blood. In order to combat this, it’s important to eat a
good dinner that contains both protein and carbs. This ensures a
“steady release of glucose to the blood stream - helping to prevent
disturbed sleep” (Mental Healthy). Eating dinner, especially with
the family ensures healthy eating habits in the long-run.

• My project is for everyone but is mostly benefited to a specific audience.

RELATIONSHIPS
• Mostly benefits the young generation and teenagers, since my research shows that
they're one of the most obese groups in the U.S.
• I wanted to give my audience quick recipes to make so that it would be convenient

for them to make them, especially if they are in a hurry.
• I wanted the recipes to be easy to make, since I wanted to show my audience that
making healthy food is easier than they think!
• Healthy food is a MUST because I want to teach my audience that eating healthy
is fundamental to good health and well-being.
• I wanted convey the fact that healthy eating helps up maintain a healthy weight
and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, and even some cancers.
