LESSON 1: THE NATURE OF GLOBAL NETWORKS

At the end of the lesson, each student must be able to:

a. define global networks
b. determine the situation of a global network

DEFINING GLOBAL NETWORKS

• Robert Holton (2008) describes it as a “major feature of contemporary process of

globalization

• The concept is made up of two terms:

 Global, that an entity’s reaches are beyond territorial boarders
 Zeev Maoz (2011), defines network as a set of units with a particular rule

• Global network can be defined as a set of manifesting certain ties and operate beyond
territorial boarders of particular country
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GLOBAL
NETWORK

1. Global networks cross “borders” and connect more than one country

2. Movement across a boundary is long-term

3. Global networks are not confined within a particular country

ACTIVITY 9: GLOBAL NETWORK OR NOT?
Directions: Determine if the following situations can be considered as examples of global network. Be able to explain
why you think the situation is an example or not an example of global network.

Situation #1:

The President of the University of the Philippines attends an international conference of university heads and leaders
of Bangkok, Thailand.

Is this an example of global network? Why? _____________________________________________________

Situation #2:

An international nongovernment organization in Southeast Asia that is tasked to monitor cases of human right
violation in the region is established.

Is this an example of global network? Why? _______________________________________________________

ACTIVITY 10: CHOOSE, DRAW & EXPLAIN!

Choose a particular product and identify the global origins of its

parts/ingredients. Draw a map that shows the geographical origins of the

different components/ingredients of that particular gadget or product. Be able to

explain how the product is an example of global network production.
