INTRODUCTION

  WHAT IS FUGACITY?
 The concept of fugacity was introduced by G.N. Lewis
(1901) and is widely used in solution thermodynamics
to represent the behavior of real gases.
 STANDARD STATE FOR FUGACITY:
ΔG
3

FUGACITY COEFFICIENT: (F)
• The ratio of fugacity to pressure is referred to as
fugacity coefficient.
F
• dimensionless and depends on nature of the gas,
the pressure, and the temperature

4
Effect of Temperature and Pressure on Fugacity

(d ln f / dT)

• H is the molar enthalpy of the gas at the

given pressure and H° is the enthalpy at
a very low pressure.
5
Effect of Temperature and Pressure on Fugacity

dG = Vdp =RT d ln f

(d ln f / dp)

6
DETERMINATION OF FUGACITY OF
PURE GASES

 USING COMPRESSIBILITY FACTOR, Z

 USING RESIDUAL VOLUMES
USING EQUATION OF STATE

7
• The compressibility factor Z of a real gas is the ratio of

its volume to the volume of an ideal gas at the same

temperature and pressure.

ln f/pdp

• Graphically by plotting (Z – 1)/P against P.

8

USING RESIDUAL VOLUMES
The residual volume a is defined as the difference
between V and the volume occupied by one mole
of an ideal gas at the same temperature and
pressure.
α
(d ln f / dp)

9
USING EQUATION OF STATE
The fugacity of gas obeying the VAN DER WAAL’S
equation:

• FUGACITIES OF SOLIDS AND

LIQUIDS
10
REAL LIFE APPLICATION OF FUGACITY

▰ Fugacity model to simulate the environmental

concentration of pesticides.
Fugacity allows the calculation of the total distribution
of the mass of a pesticide among compartments and it
facilitates the estimation of the concentration of the
pesticide in each compartment.
▰ Comprehensive Exposure and Risk Assessment.
