Title: What is extreme weather?

Date: 05/08/2021
To start: Write 3 questions you would like to ask
about the photo.
Lesson objectives
• To define what extreme weather is

• To identify examples of extreme weather

• To describe what happens during different extreme

weather events
Extreme weather is when a weather event is
significantly different from the average or
usual weather pattern.
Task: Write out the following statements and decide whether
it is extreme weather or not. You will then need explain your
decision.
1. A windy day in Manchester.
2. A hurricane in the New Orleans.
3. A hot day in Spain.
4. A wildfire caused by extreme heat in Australia.
5. Storm Brendan which hit the UK.
What are the different types of
extreme weather?
• Heatwaves, droughts and wildfires
• Heavy and prolonged rainfall causing floods
• Hurricanes (tropical storms)
• Tornados
• Blizzards
Type of extreme weather  Description of the extreme weather
Tornado Tornados are fast-spinning channels of air. Tornados typically include
wind, but can also include rain, clouds and even hail. The rapid winds’
speeds can go up to 250 miles per hour, and they can travel 10-20 miles
per hour.
Hurricane Hurricanes are tropical storms formed in warm climates, typically
formed over an ocean. They harbour winds that can go up to 160 miles
per hour.
Flooding Flooding happens when there is substantial precipitation in a short
measure of time and water floods its natural or artificial banks onto land
that is typically dry.
Dust Storm Dust storms happen when strong breezes convey dust storms across a
zone. Dust storms ordinarily happen in desert districts.
Blizzard They incorporate weighty snow throughout a significant stretch of time,
ice, and frigid temperatures.
Tornado
Tornadoes are a type of extreme weather. They are vertical
funnels of rapidly spinning air. Tornadoes include clouds,
strong wind, rain, and sometimes hail. They move at speeds of
about 16 to 32 kilometres per hour (10 to 20 miles per hour),
and their winds can top 402 kilometres per hour (250 miles
per hour.
Hurricanes
Hurricanes, or cyclones, are a
type of extreme weather.
Hurricanes are giant, spiralling
tropical storms. They include
strong winds of over 257
kilometres per hour (160 miles
per hour). They also include
heavy rains and can drop more
than 9 trillion litres (2.4 trillion
gallons) of rain a day.
Flooding

Flooding is a type of extreme

weather. Flooding happens when
there is heavy rainfall in a short
amount of time and water overflows
its natural or artificial banks onto
land that is usually dry.
Dust Storm

Dust storms are a type of

extreme weather. Dust storms
happen when very strong winds
carry clouds of dust across an
area. Dust storms normally
occur in desert regions.
Blizzard
Blizzards are a type of extreme
weather. They include heavy snow
over a long period of time, ice, and
freezing temperatures.
