In Spanish, the present progressive can only
express what is happening right now.
Estoy hablando español ahora mismo.
I am speaking Spanish right now.

It is not used for habitual actions.


Hablo español todos los días.

I speak Spanish every day.

Cómo se forma

(How it’s formed)


An appropriate person and number of the verb estar in the present
tense is linked directly to a present participle, which is formed by
taking the infinitive. . .

estoy estamos ando


hablar
estás estáis + beber
iendo
está están iendo
escribir
. . . dropping off the ending, . . .
. . . and adding ando to -ar verbs, . . .
. . . and iendo to -er and -ir verbs.

Some irregular verbs
When the stem of an -er and -ir verb ends
in a vowel, the “i” of the ending “iendo”
changes to “y”
leyendo
er
Estoy leyendo el cuento.
trayendo
er

Juan y Marta están trayendo la comida.


oyendo
ír

Estamos oyendo el CD de Tito el Bambino.

Stem-changing -ir verbs
(o > ue, e > ie, e > i)
For certain -ir verbs only, there are special changes
in the stem when the participle is formed. The
changes will be indicated as shown in parentheses:
dormir (ue, u)
El niño está durmiendo tranquilamente.
mentir (ie, i)
Los niños están mintiendo.
servir (i, i)
Papá está sirviendo la comida.
Similar changes occur with all stem-changing -ir
verbs.

Unlike English, the present
progressive cannot be used to
express future actions

In English we can say:

I am speaking in class tomorrow.

In Spanish we say:

Mañana hablo (voy a hablar) en clase.
