FEDERATION!
WHAT IS THE WEST INDIAN FEDERATION?

• The West Indian Federation was a political union that existed from 3rd January 1958 to 31st May
1962.

• The islands of the Caribbean that were colonies of the United Kingdom, came together to form
the Federation.

• The intention of the Federation was to create a political unit that would become
independent from Britain as a single state.

• Their aim of establishment was for a political union among its members.

• It was located in  Chaguaramas  Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.


WHY DID THE WEST INDIAN FEDERATION DEPLEAT?

• The Federation collapsed due to internal political conflicts.

• Mainland colonies refused to join.

• Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica had a rivalry.

• The Caribbean wasn’t being informed about the issues.

• MOTTO: “To dwell together in unity.”

• ANTHEM: God Save The Queen

• FLAG: It bore four equally spaced narrow white stripes with a large orange-gold disc over the
middle two lines in the center of the flag, undulating horizontally across a blue field
representing the Caribbean Sea and the sun shining upon the waves. Designed by Edna Manley.
