MANAGEMENT
STRUCTURAL AND
FOUNDATION
 Structural engineers are concerned with the
conception, analysis, design and construction
of components or assemblies to resist loads
arising from internal and external forces.
 Also, they ensure that the building or other
structures can support their own weight as
well as of those who will be using them.
 By calculating the load of a structure,
structural engineers help to determine what
building materials to be use and how the
skeleton of our structure is assembled
GEOTECHNICAL AND
ENVIRONMENTAL
 Geotechnical engineering is the study of the
behavior of soils under the influence of
loading forces and soil-water interactions.
 The goals of geotechnical engineers could
range from the design of foundations and
temporary excavation support, through route
selection for railways and highways, to the
increasingly important areas of landfill
disposal of wastes and groundwater
contamination.
WATER RESOURCES
AND HYDRAULICS
 Water resources engineering is the quantitative
study of the hydrologic cycle -- the distribution
and circulation of water linking the earth's
atmosphere, land and oceans.
 Hydraulic engineering consists of the
application of fluid mechanics to water flowing
in an isolated environment (pipe, pump) or in
an open channel (river, lake, ocean). Civil
engineers are primarily concerned with open
channel flow, which is governed by the
interdependent interaction between the water
and the channel.
TRANSPORTATION
 It is the transportation engineer's
responsibility to plan, design, build, operate
and maintain these systems of transport, in
such a way as to provide for the safe, efficient
and convenient movement of people and
 goods.
Transportation has always played an essential
role in the development of society, originally
with regard to trade routes and harbors, but
more recently with regard to land- and air-
based systems as well.
CONSTRUCTION
ENGINEERING AND
MANAGEMENT
 Construction engineering management refers to
the use of critical thinking in technical and
scientific fields to improve a construction project.
This often involves designing and executing new
solutions and faster processes that can help
overcome worksite obstacles and improve
 efficiency.
Construction engineering management can help
improve safety, productivity, natural disaster
resilience and any other aspect of the
construction industry.
SELECTION OF A
CIVIL ENGINEER
As a Civil Engineer the most important decisions to be made during the
development of an Engineering project is the ENGAGEMENT.

FACTORS AFFECTING AND INFLUENCING ECONOMIC

FEASIBILITY OF THE UNDERTAKING
1. Experience
2. Organization
3. Skill
4. Integrity
5. Judgment of the civil engineer
SELECTION OF A
CIVIL ENGINEER
COST OF THE FULL RANGE OF ENGINEERING SERVICES
Not less than 1 to 2% of the life-cycle cost of most construction projects
CONTINUITY OF SERVICE
Aids in developing a relationship between the Civil Engineer and the client, which will add
to the success of the project

CRITICAL IMPORTANCE IN A SELECTION OF A CIVIL

ENGINEER AS A CONSULTANT
1. qualifications
2. experience
3. reputation
4. quality of client services
SELECTION OF A
CIVIL ENGINEER
 detailed scope of services greatly reduces the potential for
misunderstanding or confusion
 Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) supports
procedures such as those specified by CIAP Documents 101 and
102, Executive Order 164 and PD 1594
 The owner or the owner’s engineering staff is responsible in
applying the procedures of selection, procurement and
administration of engineering services
PRIME
PROFESSIONAL
PRACTICE
 Refers to the engagement of
Engineering services where the
Consulting Civil Engineer serve as the
client directly as a prime professional
and where the client is usually also the
owner of the project
EMPLOYMENT
 Refers to Civil Engineers employed by
professional consulting firms,
government agencies, educational
institutions, construction firms,
manufacturing and commercial entities
and other entities
“Every employee is a wellspring of potential
energy. The degree to which that energy is
tapped in any given employee is a function of
the interaction between the employee, his or
her manager, and the working environment. An
organization that expects, inspires, and
encourages employees to perform at their
highest levels will more than likely achieve
those results. Energized employees take charge
and d what needs to be done without being
told.”
