Martin Cooper is known as the "Father of the cell phone" because in 1973 while working for Motorola, he invented the first portable wireless phone called the DynaTAC. The DynaTAC weighed over 1.1 kg, was 25 cm long, had a battery life of only 20-30 minutes before needing a 6 hour recharge, and was one of the first devices that allowed making phone calls without being physically tethered to a landline. Cooper created the first cell phone to allow for more flexible and mobile telephone communication compared to traditional landline phones.
