Soil types

Not all soil is the same. Soil from different places is different.
There are 3 main types of soil
• Soil is made up of particles of different sizes.
• Some soil has very small particles. These do not allow water to pass through quickly
and it sticks together when it is wet. This soil is clay.
• Some soil has large particles that feel rough or coarse. There are big spaces between
these particles and this allows air to get in and out easily. This type of soil does not
stick together when it is wet because water drains through it quickly. This soil is sand
• Some soil is a mixture of small particles, large particles and organic matter or humus.
This soil contains many organisms like earthworms and other bugs. This soil lets air
get in and out easily and it also holds water and nutrients well. This is the best type
of soil to farm and grow crops because it is fertile. This is Loam soil.
