SOIL

Soil can have different colors and textures.

Soil can have bits of rock of different sizes.


Soil provides:
support and nutrients for plant growth
Weathering
breaks down rocks to create soil.
It can be caused by weather,
water, or living things
There are five components of soil:

• 1. Rock
• 2. Sand
• 3. Silt
• 4. Clay
• 5. Humus
Rock
Rocks are hard non living parts of Earth.
Sand
Sand is tiny grains of worn down rock.
Silt
Silt is tiny pieces of broken rock.

It is larger than clay, but smaller than sand.


CLAY
Clay holds water well.

Clay has many nutrients.


Humus
Humus is made of leaves, small animals, or
other decomposed substances.

Humus adds many nutrients to the soil.

Humus is in the topsoil.

Bedrock
1. Topsoil
(It is the layer on top. It is the best layer for growing plants.)

2 .Subsoil (This layer exists under topsoil layer)

3 . Bedrock (It is hard as rock.)
