Leadership & Management is Strategic Change
“Effective strategic leadership requires that management
keep everyone aligned with and committed to the
evolving vision. Change must be understood as continuous
rather than a single event. Effective strategic leadership is
a dynamic process of maintaining coherence among the
elements of the evolving vision, continuous
communication with all members of the organization, and
constant efforts to maintain members’ ongoing
commitment to the vision (ideal identity)”

Hitt et al (1994: 20)

Strategic, Visionary & Managerial Leadership
• Visionary leadership is future-oriented, concerned with risk-taking;
organizational control is maintained through socialization and shared
values and beliefs (cf ‘Leadership’)

• Managerial leadership involves stability and order, the preservation of

the existing order, focuses on day-to-day activities and is short-term
oriented (cf ‘Management’)

• Strategic leadership is the ability to influence others to voluntarily

make day-to-day decisions that enhance the long-term viability of the
organization, whilst at the same time maintaining its short-term
financial stability (Management & Leadership)
