WHAT IS THE ISSUE
CONCERNING THE FIRST
MASS HELD IN THE
PHILIPPINES?
The National Historical Commission of the
Philippines (NHCP) has decided to favor
Limasawa in Southern Leyte over Masao in
Butuan City as the official site of the 1521 Easter
Sunday Mass in the Philippines

8
WHERE DID THE FIRST MASS
HAPPENED?

The historic island of Limasawa in

Southern Leyte is the site of the First
Mass in the Philippines

9
WHEN DID THE FIRST MASS
HAPPENED?

On Easter Sunday,
31 March 1521

10
HOW DID THE FIRST MASS
HAPPENED?
Magellan ordered a mass to be held on Easter
Sunday, March 31, 1521, which was officiated by
Father Pedro Valderrama, the Andalusion chaplain
of the fleet and the only priest at the time. The
Holy First Mass, which was held near the island's
shores, marked the beginning of Roman
Catholicism in the Philippines.

11
WHO ARE THE IMPORTANT
PEOPLE INVOLVED?

 Ferdinand Magellan
 Rajah Colambu of Limasawa
 Rajah Siaiu of Butuan-Calaghan
 Antonio Pigafetta

12
EVIDENCES (PART 1)
 The mass was held in Limasawa on March 31, 1521. It was officiated by
Fr. Pedro de Valderama, chaplain of the Magellan-Elcano expedition.
That day in the Roman Catholic calendar was Easter Sunday 31

 According to the National Historical Institute, the country's first mass

was held on the island of Limasawa.

 It should be noted that the position of Mazaua in Albo's account

corresponds to the location of the island Limasawa.

13
EVIDENCES (PART 2)
 The argument that a key feature of Butuan was left out of Pigafetta's account.
 The measurement of distances between Homonhon and Limasawa between
Limasawa and Cebu, as computed by the pro-Limasawa group, matches or
approximates the delineations made by Pigafetta of the distances between
Homonhon and Mazaua and between Mazaua and Cebu.
 James Robertson's English translation of the original Italian manuscript of
Pigaffeta's account is most reliable for being ''faithful'' to the original text as duly
certified by the University of the Philippines' Department of European Language.
