 Muscles of the mouth, lips & cheeks

• lips, shape & degree of opening of the mouth –

important for clear speech
• Vocal communication + facial expression –
emphasis our communication / speech
• Several muscles alter the shape of the mouth &
lips during : speaking ; singing ; whistling &
minmicry
• The shape of the mouth & lips – controlled by a
complex 3 dimensional group of muscular slips –
which include :

* Elevators, retractors & evertors of upper lip

* Depressors, retractors & evertors of lower lip
* The orbicularis oris – the sphincter around the
mouth
* Buccinator in the cheek
 MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION IN DETAIL
(ORIGIN ; INSERTION & MAIN ACTIONS)

• M. occipitofrontalis (frontal belly)

– Origo :eapicranial aponeurosis
– Insersio : kulit & jar. Subkutan dari eyebrows & forehead
– Action : elevates eyebrows & wrinkles skin of forehead,
protracts scalp – indicating “surprise or curiosity)

Occipital belly :
- Origo : 2/3 lateral dari superior nuchal line
- Insersio : epicranial aponeurosis
- Actions : retracts scalp, increasing effectiveness of
frontal belly
• M. orbicularis occuli (Sphincter orbital)

- Origo : margin orbital medial,ligamen palpebral

medial, lacrimal bone
- insersio : skin around margin of orbit
superior & inferior tarsal plates
- Actions : closes eyelids, palpebral part – kedipan
lembut / halus ; orbital part – kedipan kuat

• M. Corrugator supercilli

– Origo : medial end of supercilliary arch

– Insersio : skin superior to middle of supraorbital margin
& supercilliary arch
– Actions : gerak alis ke medial & bwh – kerut vertikal di
atas hidung (concern or worry)
• M. Procerus & pars transversalis dari nasalis

- origo :fascis aponeurosis covering nasal bone &

lateral nasal cartilage
- Insersio: skin of inferior forehead antara alis
- Actions: depress medial end of eyebrow,
wrinkles skin over dorsum of nose disdain or dislike

• M. pars alaris dari nasalis + levator labii superioris

alaeque nasii

– Origo: frontal process of maxilla (margin inferomedial of

orbit)
– Insersio: major alar cartilage
– Actions: depress ala laterally, dilating anterior nasal
aperture (flaring nostrils) – during anger
• M. orbicularis oris (sphincter oral)

– Origo : medial maxilla & mandible, deep surface of

perioral skin, angle of mouth (modiolus)
– Insersio : mucous membrane of lips
– Actions : tonus closes rima oris, phasic contraction
compresses & protrudes lip (kissing) or resists
distension (when blowing)

• M. Levator labii superioris

– Origo: infraorbital margin (maxilla)

– Insersio: skin of upper lip
– Actions: part of dilator of the mouth, retract (elevate)
and/ or evert upper lip, deepen nasolabial sulcus
(sadness)
• M. Zygomaticus minor

– Origo: anterior aspect, zygomatic bone

– Insersio: skin of upper lip
– Actions: part of dilator of the mouth, retract (elevate)
and/ or evert upper lip, deepen nasolabial sulcus
(sadness)

• M. Buccinator

– Origo: mandible,alveolar proc.of maxilla & mandible,

raphe pterigomandibular
– Insersio: angle of mouth (modiolus), orbicularis oris
– Actions: press cheek against molar teeth, works with
tongue to keep food between occl.surface & out of oral
vestibule, resists distension when blowing
• M. Zygomaticus mayor

– Origo: lateral aspect of zygomatic bone

– Insersio: angle of mouth (modiolus)
– Actions: part of dilators of mouth, elevate labial
commisure – bilaterally to smile (happy), unilaterally to
sneer (disdain)

• M. Levator anguli oris

– Origo: infraorbital maxilla (canine fossa)

– Insersio: angle of mouth (modiolus)
– Actions: part of dilator of the mouth, retract (elevate)
and/ or evert upper lip, deepen nasolabial sulcus
(sadness)
• M. Risorius

– Origo: parotid fascia & buccal skin

– Insersio: angle of mouth
– Actions: part of dilators of mouth, widen rima
oris, as when grinning or grimacing

• M. Depressor anguli oris

– Origo: anterolateral base of mandible

– Insersio: angle of mouth
– Actions: part of dilators of mouth, depresses
labial commisure bilaterally (sadness)
• M. Depressor labii inferioris

– Origo: platysma & anterolateral body of mandible

– Insersio: skin of lower lip
– Actions: part of dilators of mouth, retracts / depressesn
and / or everts lower lip (sadness)

• M. Mentalis

– Origo : body of mandible (anterior to roots of lower

incisors)
– Insersio : skin of chin (mentolabial sulcus)
– Actions : elevates and protrudes lower lip, elevates skin
of chin (doubtness)
• M. Platysma

– Origo: subcutaneous tissue of infraclavicular &

supraclavicular regions

– Insersio: base of mandible, skin of cheek and lower lip,

angle of mouth (modiolus) ,orbicularis oris

– Actions: depresses mandible (against resistance),

tenses skin of inferior face & neck (showing tension &
stress)
