Kore/sore/are- are demonstratives and works as nouns.

are

kore sore
Rei: kore は        desu.

sore は        desu.

are は         desu.


NOUN
kono/sono/ano-はmodify nouns.

Rei: kono は watashi no desu.

sono は no kagi desu.

ano は  dare no desu ka.


sou desu- often used to answer (in the
affirmative) a question.
-can’t be used when answering a
question in the negative.
Rei: sore wa anata no kaban desu ka.
… hai, sou desu.

~ ka, ~ ka - asking the listener to choose


between 2 or more alternatives for the answer.
Rei: kore wa [ 1 ] desu ka, [ 7 ] desu ka.
… [ 7 ] desu.
N1 no N2
*some other uses of no.
1. N1 explains what N2 is about
kore wa konpyu-ta- no hon desu.
2. N1 indicates who owns N2
kore wa watashino hon desu.

no substituting for a noun


- no is used as a replacement for things but not
for people.
Rei: are wa dare no kaban desu ka.
… Sato-san no desu.

sou desu ka- this expression is used by the


speaker to acknowledge some new info. he or she
has just been given.
- pronounced with falling intonation.
Rei: kono kuruma wa anata no desu ka.
… iie, chigaimasu. Guputa san no desu.
sou desu ka.
