Physiology of stress:

 Autonomic nervous system


The autonomic nervous system is a control system that acts largely unconsciously
and regulates bodily functions, such as the heart rate, digestion
1.Sympathetic nervous system
The sympathetic nervous system directs the body's rapid involuntary response to
dangerous or stressful situations
2. Para sympathetic nervous system
The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body's rest and
digestion response when the body is relaxed, resting, or feeding
Adrenal gland

Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune
system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions.
1.Adrenal medulla:
 Adrenaline hormone
Activates sympathetic nervous system
 Nor adrenaline hormone
Activates parasympathetic nervous system
Hypothalamus

Hypothalamus is a part of brain and plays a crucial role in many important


functions, including releasing hormones. regulating body temperature
Limbic system:
Deals with emotions and memory.
1. Hippocampus
carry out memory
2. Amygdala
Handle emotions
Stress management techniques:
 Good general health
Healthy diet
Proper sleep
Regular exercise
Avoid mood enhancing foods and drinks like caffeine.
 Breathing and body scan
Hold your breath. Pause for a second or two.
Exhale slowly through pursed lips
 Progressive muscle relaxation
This exercise will help you to lower your overall tension and stress levels, and help you
relax when you are feeling anxious.

 There are two types of stress


1.Eustress
Eustress is a positive type of stress
2. Distress
Distress is a negative type of stress
