Elements of Art and Principles of Composition

A. Line- is a associated with the body’s axis as it moves

toward different directions and adjust to point through
various positions and actions such as walking, running,
standing, sitting
B. Color-is associated with our experience of cold and warmth
and the quality of light in our tropical environment, the
cycles of night and day and of darkness and light.
Aspect of color
Hue-it’s how the light waves of various lengths and rapidity of
vibrations bounce off objects and enter our eyes
Value-
River of Life- Galo Ocampo/ Filipinos struggles through history-Carlos “botong
“Francisco
C. Value-refers to the gradations of tone fr
light to dark which can be an aspect of
color as discussed. It couls also refer to the
play of light and dark on an object or
scene.
D. Texture- refers to how objects and surfaces
feel and is most associated with the sense of
touch or tactility. Texture is created when
several lines combine. The combination may
be smooth, translucent, fine, silky, satiny,
velvety, sandy, furry, feathery, slimy, gritty,
rough, course, porous, irregular, jagged, thick ,
thin and so on. Ie. Barong and saya translucent
and delicate. Crocheted soft yet thick.
• E. Shape- refers to the forms that are 2
dimensional or 3 dimensional. 2
dimensional shapes exist as planes
having length and width. 3 dimensional
shapes possess length width and
volume. It can be geometric,
biomorphic or free inventions.

E. Composition in space- involves the
relationship between figures and
elements. It also refers to how these
elements are organized and composed
according to principles of organization,
among them balance, proportion, rhythm,
unity in variety, dominance and
subordination.
• Movement- may occur in 2 dimensional
design as rhythm or through the
recurrence of motifs, their alternation
or progression unfolding in a series.
Movement is also very much related to
line and the direction of the eye.

modelling 3 dimensional objects and
figures.
• Figurative art-describes artwork(paintings and
sculptures) that is clearly derived from real object
sources and so is, by definition representational.

judge’s artwork based on how real it looks.
• Formalism-This approach regards literature as
“unique form of human knowledge that needs to
be examined on its own terms”. Primary goal for a
formalist critics is to determine how such elements
work together with the text’s content to shape its
effect upon readers. Formalism allows the reader to
analyze a literary piece with complete objectivity
• Emotionalism-An aesthetic and critical
theory of art which gives emphasis on the
expressive qualities. According to this
theory, the most important thing about
work of art is the vivid communication of
moods, feelings and ideas.
• -Though some critics think that the most
important thing about a work of art is the
