Gay couples adopting children

MASTER, AN I, PRACTICI DE COMUNICARE ÎN LIMBA ENGLEZĂ

Argumentation Theory
CLAME and DATA - EQUAL RIGHTS TO ADOPT

 CLAIM - Gay and heterosexual couples

deserve the same legal rights to adopt.
Anything less represents a discrimination
based on homophobia.
 DATA - The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights clarifies the term of EQUALITY: “all
are equal before the law … all are entitled to
equal protection against any
discrimination...”
REBUTTAL
RELIGION, MORAL VALUES AND CONCERNS

 Gay parenting concepts run against many

religious beliefs.
 People opposing the adoption voiced major fears:
 children growing up with gay parents would show
disturbances in gender identity;
 children in the custody of gay or lesbian parents will be more
vulnerable to mental breakdown;
 children living with gay parents may be stigmatized;
 children living with gay parents may be more likely to be
sexually abused;
 children of gay parents may experience difficulty in social
relationships
WARRANT
BREAKING DOWN PREJUDICES
 Homosexuality is not a mental disorder
 The American Psychiatric Association removed "homosexuality" from the
list of mental disorders (1975).

 LGBTQ couples make great parents

Homosexual couples tend to be better motivated and more committed than
heterosexual parents;
 There was no evidence of any behavior problems among children of gay
parents;
 Fears that children in custody of gay parents might be at risk for sexual
abuse are without basis;
 Children fare better when parents are in good psychological health and
living happily with a gay partner.
 The children in homosexual families grow up more tolerant and open-
minded.
BACKING
ORPHAN AND ABANDONED CHILDREN NEED FAMILIES

 Most will come from orphanages, foster homes or single

parents unable to cope;
 Many children are from poor countries;
 Given the shortage of suitable straight couples, gay
adoption can provide the loving homes orphan children
need.
 The number of children in state care and orphanages is
constantly growing;
 Many children linger in the system and grow up without
the warmth of a family and a home, without the love of
a parent whether this parent is heterosexual or gay.
The best way to make children good is to
make them happy. Oscar Wilde
