Difference between ester and ether

 Ester and ether are organic molecules with oxygen

atoms.
 Both have the ether linkage which is –O-.
 The compound  ester possesses a carbon-carbonyl-
oxygen bond, while the ether compound has a carbon-
oxygen-carbon bond.
WHAT IS ESTER?
 An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the
compound's carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group.
 Esters have a general formula of rcoor’.
 Esters are made by the reaction between a carboxylic acid with an
alcohol.
 Esters are named by writing the names of the alcohol derived part
first.
a. Then the name derived from the acid part is written with the
ending –ate or –oate.
 The term "ester" was coined by the German chemist
Leopold Gmelin in 1848. It is likely the term was a
contraction of the German word essigäther, which means
"acetic ether."
Examples of Esters
 Ethyl acetate (ethyl ethanoate) is an ester. The hydrogen on the carboxyl
group of acetic acid is replaced with an ethyl group.
 Other examples of esters include:

• ethyl propanoate
• propyl methanoate
• propyl ethanoate
• methyl butanoate.
