The

Nutrition
Label
Practically everyday we see this
nutrition label in what we eat and drink,
but what does it actually mean and how
does it affect us in our daily lives?
This is the
example of a
nutrition label,
M&M’s that I am
going to be using
as an example.
Calories
The amount of calories needed vary
per person. Calories refer to the
energy supplied from all the sources
in a serving of a food. Without
calories aside from losing weight
you won’t get all the nutrients your
body needs. You will most likely
feel sluggish and drained.
Fats
Fats are actually quite good for you,
healthy fats that is. These include
peanut butter, avocados, cheese, dark
chocolate, eggs, fish nuts, chia seeds
and so much more. Fats like these help
your cholesterol, they protect your
organs, give you energy, support cell
growth, and lower the risk of heart
problems. Saturated fats need to be
limited, trans fat need to be avoided.
Cholesterol
Cholesterol is not necessary. Our
bodies produce our own cholesterol.
And foods that are higher in dietary
cholesterol are generally higher in
saturated fat which thus increases the
risk of developing cardiovascular
disease. Foods that contain
cholesterol are only found in animal
products such as, meat, dairy
products and spreads.
Sodium
Sodium is necessary but the average american
obtains way too much sodium each day leading
to diseases such as high blood pressure, which
can raise the risk of heart attacks, heart failure,
stroke, kidney disease, and blindness. It found
mostly in processed foods such as frozen pizza,
hamburgers, tacos and so much more.
Dietary Fiber
Diets higher in dietary fiber can
increase the frequency of bowel
movements and can reduce the
risk of developing cardiovascular
disease. The higher it is the more
full you will feel and faster. Foods
that have fiber are beans, fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, and
nuts.
Sugars
There are healthy types of sugars and also bad types of
sugar. The sugar we get in our fruit is actually great for
you, apples, bananas, oranges, and strawberries are all
great examples of the good type of sugar, . But sugars
like in baked goods, soft drinks, or snack foods all have
bad sugars. There is really no benefit from these types of
sugars other than it tastes good and satisfies your
addiction for it. Too much of these bad sugar can lead to
diseases like diabetes, obesity, it increases the risk of
heart disease, it increases risk of cancer, it can cause
acne, fatty liver, depression, and even accelerates the
skin aging process.
Protein
Protein is found in meat, soy, eggs,
beans, nuts, and tofu. Protein helps
your body build and repair cells and
body tissue. Protein is a major part
of your skin, hair, nails, muscle,
bone, and internal organs. Protein is
also found in almost all body fluids.
Proteins have amino acids we need
that we can only be obtained
through food.
