“THE MORALITY OF SEXUALITY IN VIEW OF THE LGBT”

I. HUMAN PERSON IS IMAGO DEI

Man, Woman created in the

Image and likeness of God
(Gen 1: 27)
Gen 1:27: “God created man in
his image, in the divine image
he created him; male and
female he created them.”
Human characteristics that
reflect God’s image in us

- Self-awareness
- Self-sacrifice
- Creativity
- companionship
- community
- family
A. THEMEANING
OF SEXUALITY
HUMAN SEXUALITY AS A GIFT FROM GOD
“Human sexuality is thus a good, part of that created gift which
God saw as being ‘very good’.”

Gen 1:31 “God looked at everything he

had made, and he found it very good.”
Human Sexuality is not only biological
but relational!!!

“Sexuality signifies an essential dimension of the

whole person, by which he/she enters into
relationship with others.”
It touches every aspect of personal
life and has to be developed by all
men and women just as life itself
must be.
“Sexuality is expressed in
Man’s vocation to Love”
Love is therefore the fundamental
and innate vocation of every
human being
Man is called to love in his
unified totality
“HUMAN SEXUALITY AS A
MANIFESTATION OF THE PERSON”

“The body, in fact,

and only the body,
is capable of
making visible what
is invisible: the
spiritual and the
divine.”
B. THE PHENOMENON
OF HOMOSEXUALITY
Homosexuality is romantic attraction,sexu
al attraction or sexual behaviour between
members of the same sex or gender.
As a sexual orientation, homosexuality is
"an enduring pattern of emotional,
romantic, and/or sexual attractions“ to
people of the same sex.

C. MORAL EVALUATION ON HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS
(cf. PASTORAL CARE OF HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS (Oct 1,
1986 )
To choose someone of the same sex for one's sexual activity
is to eradicate:

-Rich symbolism
-Goals
-Creator's sexual design
Genesis 2:18-24
 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I
18

will make him a helper fit for  him.”

  19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field
and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he
would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was
its name.
  20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to
every beast of the field. But for Adam[c] there was not found a helper fit for
him
  21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he
slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh
 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made[d] into a
22

woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “ This at last
is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called
Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his
24

wife, and they shall become one flesh.

That is why a man leaves
24

his father and mother and

is united to his wife, and
they become one flesh.

Homosexual activity is not a complementary
union, able to transmit life; and so it thwarts
the call to a life of that form of self-giving
which the Gospel says is the essence of
Christian living.
( LETTER TO THE BISHOPS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE PASTORAL CARE OF HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS , NO. 7, Oct 1, 1986 )
Homosexuality a disordered sexual
inclination
 This does not mean that homosexual
persons are not often generous and giving
of themselves; but when they engage in
homosexual activity they confirm within
themselves a disordered sexual inclination
which is essentially self-indulgent.
(LETTER TO THE BISHOPS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE PASTORAL CARE OF HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS , NO. 7, Oct 1, 1986 )
Sacred Scripture condemns homosexual acts “as a
serious depravity... (cf. Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10).

Homosexual activity:
-prevents one's own fulfilment
 happiness - as contrary to the
creative wisdom of God.
PASTORAL CARE OF THE PERSONS WITH
HOMOSEXUAL ORIENTATION
Oct 1, 1986

The intrinsic dignity of each person

must always be respected in word,
in action and in law.
What do homosexual persons need
to do who seek the Lord?

1) to enact the will of God in their life

2) To unite their suffering with Christ
3) reception of the sacraments,
4) prayer, counseling and individual care.
 Itis, in effect, none other than the teaching of
Paul the Apostle to the Galatians when he
says that the Spirit produces in the lives of the
faithful
 "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-
control" (5:22)
 and further (v. 24),
 "You cannot belong to Christ unless you
crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires."
(LETTER TO THE BISHOPS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE PASTORAL CARE OF HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS , NO. 7, Oct 1, 1986 ) encourages the Bishops:

 To provide pastoral care in full accord with the

teaching of the Church for homosexual persons,,,

 Authentic pastoral programme always considers …

homosexual activity - immoral.

 Only what is true can ultimately be PASTORAL.

Courage Philippines
Courage is an apostolate of the Roman Catholic Church that provides spiritual
support for men and women with same-sex attractions who desire to develop
lives of interior chastity in union with Christ.
Homosexual persons need an extra care
from a Christian Community.

They are called to A CHASTE LIFE!!!!

The human person, made in the
image and likeness of God, can
hardly be adequately described
by a reductionist reference to
his or her sexual orientation.
No to
reductionist
reference to the
person’s sexual
orientation…
The Name of God is Mercy
 "I am glad that we are talking about
'homosexual people' because before
all else comes the individual person,
in his wholeness and dignity. And
people should not be defined only
by their sexual tendencies: let us not
forget that God loves all his
creatures and we are destined to
receive his infinite love.“
(Pope Francis)
D. ARGUMENTS FROM REASON AGAINST LEGAL
RECOGNITION OF HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS

From the order of right reason

Laws in favour of homosexual unions are
contrary to right reason because they confer
legal guarantees, analogous to those
granted to marriage, to unions between
persons of the same sex.
Legal recognition of
homosexual unions would
obscure certain basic moral
values and cause a devaluation
of the institution of marriage.
Homosexual acts “close the sexual act
to the gift of life.
They do not proceed from a genuine
affective and sexual complementarity
(MAN-WOMAN)
Under no circumstances can they be
approved”.
The State could not
grant legal standing to
such unions without
failing in its duty to
promote and defend
marriage as an
institution essential to
the common good.
The common good
requires that laws
recognize, promote and
protect marriage as the
basis of the family, the
primary unit of society.
Mar r i ag e i s hol y, wh il e
ho mos e xual ac ts go
ag ain s t the nat ur al
m or al l aw.
From the biological and anthropological order

Homosexual unions are totally lacking in:

biological
anthropological
conjugal dimension.
Theabsence of sexual
complementarity in these unions
creates obstacles in the normal
development of children who
would be placed in the care of
such persons.
They would be
deprived of the
experience of either
fatherhood or
motherhood.
From the social order

Society owes its continued survival to

the family, founded on marriage.

Byputting
homosexual unions
on a legal plane
analogous to that of
marriage and the
family, the State acts
arbitrarily and in
contradiction with its
duties.
Differentiating between
persons or refusing social
recognition or benefits is
unacceptable only when it
is contrary to justice. (no. 8)
The denial of the social and
legal status of same sex
union is not opposed to
justice; on the contrary,
justice requires it. (no. 8)
From the legal order (n0. 9)

Married couples ensure the

succession of generations …within
the public interest … therefore, civil
law grants them institutional
recognition.
Homosexual unions, on the other hand, do
not need specific attention from the legal
standpoint since they do not exercise this
function for the common good.
 Legalrecognition of
homosexual unions …would
obscure basic values which
belong to the common
inheritance of humanity.
 Theprinciples of respect and
non-discrimination cannot
be invoked to support legal
recognition of homosexual
unions.
The Church cannot
fail to defend
these values, for
the good of men
and women and
for the good of
society itself.
The Catholic law-maker
has a moral duty to
express his opposition
clearly and publicly and
to vote against it.

To vote in favour of a law

so harmful to the common
good is gravely immoral.
E. MINISTRY OF
COMPANIONSHIP
TO THE LGBT
1. Theology of Presence
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:
14)
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only
Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life.” (Jn. 3:16)
 2. Know your flock
e

“I am the good shepherd; I know my

sheep and my sheep know me—  just as
the Father knows me and I know the
Father—and I lay down my life for the
sheep.” (Jn. 10: 14-15)
3. Listening with sensitivity and
compassion
“31The crowd chided them to be silent, but they shouted all the louder,
“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32Jesus stopped and called
them. “What do you want Me to dofor you?” He asked. 33“Lord,” they
answered, “let our eyes be opened.”…”(Mt. 20: 31-33)
“"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind
man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." (Mk 10: 51)
4. Understanding (non-judgmental approach)

“Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman,

where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, Lord.” she answered. “Neither do I condemn you.
Jesus declared. “Now” go and sin no more.”
(Jn. 8: 10-11)
To accompany is to take away
our biases and prejudices
To accompany is to understand the
weaknesses of the other
5. Walking with them (be a friend and companion)

“The Gospel of Luke 24:13-32 describes the

encounter on the road and the supper
at Emmaus, and states that a disciple named
Cleopas was walking towards Emmaus with
another disciple when they met Jesus. They
did not recognize him, and discussed their
sadness at recent events with him.”
To journey with people in the
circumstances of their life
To walk with their joys
To walk with their sorrows
To walk with their failures and success
To walk with their ups and downs

6. Guiding/Exhorting

“Let no one despise your youth, but set an

example for the believers in speech, in
conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until
I come, devote yourself to the
public reading of Scripture, to exhortation,
and to teaching. (1 Timothy 4: 12-13)
Firmness and truthfulness should be
our ways in accompanying others
To teach is our prophetic mission
To give witness to our faith as
modern apostles
7. Feeling with them (sympathy)

“Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who
weep.” (Romans 12:15 )

“Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of
Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you
are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.” (Galatians
6:2-3 )
F. WHY DO WE ENGAGE IN
THE MINISTRY OF
ACCOMPANIMENT
(COMPANIONSHIP - Pastoral
Care?)
Jesus accompanies the Sinful Humanity!
“Jesus Christ is the face of the
Father’s mercy. These words might
well sum up the mystery of the
Christian faith. Mercy has become
living and visible in Jesus of
Nazareth, reaching its culmination in
him.” (MV, 1)
Jesus accompanies the lost, the last and the least and
brings out the best of them!
Jesus engages in constructive response! Pro-active
measures and not reactive response to the weakness of
people!
“Constructive response seeking to transform the person…
That is how Jesus treated the Samaritan woman (cf. Jn 4:1-
26): he addressed her desire for true love, in order to free
her from the darkness in her life and to bring her to the full
joy of the Gospel.” (AL, n. 294)
The Church as the bride of Christ also heals the wounds of
her children!

Let us not forget that

the Church’s task is often like
that of a field hospital.” (AL,
291)
HOW ARE WE GOING TO PERFORM THIS
PASTORAL CARE?

“Along these lines, Saint John Paul

II proposed the so-called “law of
gradualness” in the knowledge that
the human being “knows, loves and
accomplishes moral good by different
stages of growth”.(AL, n. 295, cf. Familiaris Consortio, n. 34)
“The way of the Church is not to condemn
anyone for ever!!!
… it is to pour out the balm of God’s
mercy on all those who ask for it with a
sincere heart… For true charity is always
unmerited, unconditional and gratuitous” (AL,
n. 296)
“Itis a matter of reaching out to everyone,
of needing to help each person find his or
her proper way of participating in the
ecclesial community and thus to experience
being touched by an “unmerited,
unconditional and gratuitous” mercy.” (AL, n. 297)
“What we are speaking of is a process of
accompaniment and discernment which
“guides the faithful to an awareness of
their situation before God.“ AL, n. 300)
We should engage in PRO-ACTIVE MEASURES!

“Today, more important than the

pastoral care of failures is the
pastoral effort to strengthen
marriages and thus to prevent their
breakdown.” (AL, n. 307
THE END!
MUCHAS GRACIAS!
CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PROPOSALS
TO GIVE LEGAL RECOGNITION
TO UNIONS
BETWEEN HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS, June 3, 2003)
CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

In the first place, man, the image of

God, was created “male and female”
(Gen 1:27). Men and women are equal
as persons and complementary as
male and female. Sexuality is
something that pertains to the
physical-biological realm and has also
been raised to a new level – the
Nonetheless, according to the teaching of the
Church, men and women with homosexual
tendencies “must be accepted with respect,
compassion and sensitivity.
 Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard
should be avoided”. They are called, like other
Christians, to live the virtue of chastity.
The homosexual inclination is however
“objectively disordered” and homosexual
practices are “sins gravely contrary to chastity”.
The inevitable consequence
of legal recognition of
homosexual unions would
be the redefinition of
marriage, which would
become, in its legal status,
an institution devoid of
essential reference to
factors linked to
heterosexuality; for
example, procreation and
raising children (n0. 8)
Things we should be aware of:

1)The unfounded and demeaning assumption that
the sexual behaviour of homosexual persons is
always and totally compulsive…
 2) The abandonment of homosexual activity will
require a profound collaboration of the individual
with God's liberating grace.
Allowing children to be adopted
by persons living in such unions
would actually mean doing
violence to these children, in the
sense that their condition of
dependency would be used to
place them in an environment
that is not conducive to their full
human development.
