Grammar (Gerunds and Infinitives)
 Use of Gerunds:
 Subject of a sentence (general) Eg: Running is very good

to keep you fit.


 Behind some verbs: enjoy, admit, mind, avoid, miss,

suggest, etc. Eg: She enjoys visiting her parents every


weekend.
 Behind some prepositions. Eg: Thank you for giving me

another opportunity.
 Behind some expressions like: give up, put off, go

on/carry on, feel like, it’s no use, etc. Eg: You should
give up smoking.
 Careful with negative sentences !!!
 When I am on holiday, I enjoy not having to get up

early.
Style: Three- Part Paragraph
 The topic sentence (introduces your idea or
opinion on a topic/ controlling idea) All the
sentences in the paragraph must relate to
describe/exemplify the topic sentence.
 Supporting Sentence (2nd part/includes

details/examples that develop your ideas about


the topic./ The longest part of paragraph)
 The Concluding Sentence (it can reflect different

things: summary of your idea/ provide the


solution for a problem/re-state your thesis
statement/ offer an opinion).
