STEEL STRUCTURES

CE-308
Instructional Objectives

On successful completion of this course, the students

should be able to:

 Describe the theories and models suitable for the

analysis and design of structural steel member.
 Design structural steel members under axial load
,flexure and shear.
 Design connections in structural steel members.
Course Contents
 Study of codes and specifications relating to design of structures.
 Introduction to steel as a structural material, hot rolled, cold formed
and built up sections. Objectives of designers and selection of design
criteria.

1. What are steel structures
• In steel structures, structural steel is the main
load carrying material to transfer the load within
them and to transfer load to the ground
• Ex: - I-Beam, Tee section, [ - Channel section,
Steel plate etc..,
• Steel concrete composite structures are also used
in high-rise buildings but we are only going to
study about steel structures in this paper
Physical Properties of Steel
5. STEEL SECTIONS
Rolled Steel Channel Section

 C 250×61.2
Rolled Steel Angle Section

 L178×102×19.0
