MEDICAL TREATMENT PROBLEM:

Isoniazid is an antibiotic that fights bacteria

. Isoniazid is used to treat and to prevent tub
erculosis (TB). You may need to take other TB m
edicines in combination with isoniazid. When tr
eating active TB, isoniazid must be used with o
ther TB medicines. It may also be used for atyp
ical types of mycobacteria.Tuberculosis may be
resistant to isoniazid if used alone.
 METHOD:
All patients commencing treatment for LTBI pr
ospectively were enrolled in an ongoing datab
ase of LTBI treatment outcomes particularly r
elated to adverse effects,treatment adherenc,
and treatment cocompletion.

 RESULTS:
Data on the first 100 patients who were presc
ribed isoniazid are presented.56 patients rep
orted at least one adverse effect at some sta
ge during treatment,with 6 experiencing at le
ast one WHO Grade 3--4 adverse effect.IIncrea
sed age was significantly associated with ris
k of adverse effects(odds ratio)OR=1.05 per y
ear and (confidence interval)CI=1.02-1.08 95%
. 85% had documented completion of therapy lo
cally with10% ceasing IPT due to adverse effe
ct.
 INDICATION:
Recommended for all forms of tuberculosis
in which organisms are susceptible.
