Pavement Types
• Flexible (Bituminous)
Flexible pavement used because of
> Lack of funds
> Shortage of cement

• Rigid (Concrete)
Rigid pavement is used because of
> Cost-Effective
> Sustainable

3
WHITE-TOPPING OF CONCRETE

“White topping” is a pavement system of

Portland cement concrete placed on
Distressed asphalt pavement.

4
Types of white-topping
 Conventional white-topping
 Thin white-topping

 Ultra thin white-topping

6
What is TWT and UTW ?
Thin White-topping (TWT)
 Pavement thickness – 100-200mm
 Designed and constructed with and without consideration of
bond between bitumen pavement and concrete

Ultra-Thin White-topping (UTW)

 Pavement thickness – 50-100mm
 Designed and constructed with consideration of bond between
bitumen pavement and concrete
 Closer joint spacing

White Topping Work
• Methods of surface preparation

1. Milling
2. Surface Scrapping
3. Surface Chiseling

13
Cracks in pavement
Transverse Cracks
Diagonal Cracks
Longitudinal Cracks

14
Transverse Cracks
Appear at right angles to pavement
centre-line.
Due to long joint spacing, insufficient
support from foundation.

Diagonal Cracks
• Due to tension.
• Indicates inadequacy of slab thickness.

Longitudinal Cracks
• Parallel to centre-line of pavement.
• Due to poor construction practice,
lateral construction, warping.

15
Repairs at surface level
These are partial depth repairs, to improve riding
quality.

If cracks on the existing pavement is wider than

5mm, The crack should be filled with Emulsions.

Cracked concrete is replaced with fresh concrete.

16
ADVANTAGES OF WHITE-TOPPING
•Reduced thickness
•Fast-Track construction
•Reduced maintenance
•Cost-Effective compared to asphalt overlays
•Improved service life
•Reduction in operational costs and lower absorption of solar
energy

17
Conclusion:
 Due to advances in the area of mechanization and fast
track construction, concrete roads and white topping provide a
sustainable as well as cost effective option for pavement
construction.
This technology demonstration project in Bangalore has
evoked positive response from people, technical consultants,
construction industry, academic & research institutions.
The Government of Karnataka, BBMP and other civic
agencies have come forward to adopt this technology.
