–Refers to the differences in social
behaviors that different cultures exhibit
around the world.
–What may be considered good
etiquette in one culture may be
considered bad etiquette in one
another.
Variations within
Cultures
- the identity that is tied to being part of a

- NATION- a group of people who share the


same history, traditions and language.
Oftentimes inhabit a STATE.

- CITIZENSHIP- person’s legal and political


status in a city or state, which means that
an individual has been registered with the
government in the same country.

Ethnicity
- Smaller cultural groups (ethnic
groups) that share the specific
environments, traditions and histories
that are not necessarily subscribed to
the mainstream culture.
ETHNOS- group, nation, people
180 ethnic groups
RACE- refers to the group of people
that shares the same physical
attributes, such as skin color, height
and facial features.
Issues about Race and
Ethnicity
• Racism
- discrimination or prejudice based on one’s race.
• Ethnocentrism
- discrimination or prejudice based on one’s culture.
• Genocide
- elimination of a group of people from the same race,
ethnic groups, religion or nation.
• Ethnic Cleansing
- harassment, rape, or forced migration of an ethnic group
to banish them from a certain area or territory.
