Guide - Dr. A.B.Kulkarni

Introduction

•These Hydraulic floor Cranes, provide an efficient low cost

alternative to material handling equipment.
•Strong, robust, sturdy and built to very standard.
• Crane structure consists of chasis , vertical column, arm and
hydraulic cylinder.
•These crane can be used in workshop , industry where space
availability is less.
OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT

Lift the heavy load Ease of operation

Reduce storage space To reduce damage risk

Reduce human effort Hydraulic advantage to lift the load

COMPONENTS
Base Extending Arm

Support Column Adjusting base legs

Load wheels
Hydraulic Bottle Jack
Calculations
• The angle subtended by the arm for maximum height at point B is calculated by basic construction and
trigonometry
L (BC”) = 140 mm L (C”D) = 120 mm ∠ C”BC = sin−1 (120/140) = 58.99 ° ∠ C”BC = 59°
• . Hinge for cylinder to be attached = 140mm from point .
‘B’ along column Hinge for piston to be attached = 140mm from point ‘B’ along arm
∴ ∠BAC = ∠ABC = 45° 3 In fig. L (AB) = 140mm L (BC”) = 140mm L (AC”) = 278mm

• Applying Lami’s Theorem

[l(AB)/Sin(C”)] = [l(BC”)/Sin (A)]=[l(AC”)/Sin(B)]
∴ Sin (A) = 1/ {l (AC”)/Sin (B)} x l (BC”) Sin (A) = [Sin (90+59)/278] x 140 Sin (A) = 0.259
∠A = ∠BAC”= 15.03°
I.e. Angle subtended by cylinder with vertical column when piston is fully extended i.e. maximum height
[upper position].
• Forces on cylinder : Various forces are act on arm at different lifting positions.
1. At zeroth position Overhanging arm is perpendicular to the vertical column
Taking moment @ point ‘B’ MB = 0 = 10000 x (1500) – RC x (140) RC = 107.14285 KN
Reaction in direction of cylinder will be given by RCylinder = 107.14285 x (1/√2) = 75161.44 N
For RB taking moment @ point ‘E’ ME = D = RB x (1500) + RC x (1500-140) RB = 68690.37 N
2. At upper position
Taking moment @ point ‘B’ MB = 0 = 10000x l (BF) - RC x l (BD)
MB = 10000 x 1500 Cos (59°) – RC x 140 Cos(59°) RC = 107.14285 KN
Now, Reaction in the direction of cylinder
Cylinder = RC Cos (15.03°) = 103476.16 N
For RB upper position. Take moment @ point E” ME” = 0 = RB x l (BF) + RC x l (DF) RB Cos (59°) = 107142.85 x
(1500-140) x Cos (59°) RB = 68690.37 N
