• Every scientific discovery started from a real-life story –
Paint the story. The more vivid, the better. There are the

Application of Conservation of Mass
Problem No 1. Jaylo completely combusted 1.23 grams of
elemental Tin in the presence of 3.54 grams of oxygen gas.
After the reaction, elemental Tin remained and he recovered
1.48 grams of tin oxide ( Only on solid product). What is the
mass of oxygen remaining?

Application of Conservation of Mass
Problem No 1. Jaylo completely combusted 1.23 grams of
elemental Tin in the presence of 3.54 grams of oxygen gas.
After the reaction, elemental Tin remained and he recovered
1.48 grams of tin oxide ( Only on solid product). What is the
mass of oxygen remaining?
Given:
Before the reaction: 1.23 grams of elemental tin, 3.54 grams oxygen gas

After the reaction: 1.48 grams of tin oxide. 0 gram of

elemental tin ( Fully Consumed ) + Oxygen ( Unknown)
SOLUTION:
Mass of elemental tin + Mass of oxygen gas = Mass of tin
oxide + mass of oxygen
Given:
Before the reaction: 1.23 grams of elemental tin, 3.54 grams oxygen gas

After the reaction: 1.48 grams of tin oxide. 0 gram of

elemental tin ( Fully Consumed )

SOLUTION:
Mass of elemental tin + Mass of oxygen gas = Mass of tin
oxide + mass of oxygen

1.23 grams + 3.54 grams of oxygen = 1.48 grams + mass of

oxygen
4.78 grams = 1.48 grams + mass of oxygen
4.78 g – 1.48 g = mass of oxygen
3. 29 grams = mass of oxygen
Total mass of substance after a chemical reaction = Total
mass of substance before the reaction
SOLUTION:
Mass of elemental tin + Mass of oxygen gas = Mass of tin
oxide + mass of oxygen
• 1.23 grams + 3.54 grams of oxygen = 1.48 grams + mass of
oxygen
• 4.77 grams = 1.48 grams + mass of oxygen
• 4.77 g – 1.48 g = mass of oxygen
3. 29 grams = mass of oxygen

Check : 1.23 g + 3.54 g = 1.48 g + 3.29 g

4.77 g = 4.77 g
Problem No 2. Phoebe performed an experiment where she
mixed 25.34 g of elemental tin in the presence of 1.23 g of
oxygen gas. After the reaction, all the oxygen gas was
consumed and he recovered 7.31 g of tin oxide. How much
elemental tin is present after the reaction?

Given:
Before the reaction: 25.34 g of elemental tin, 1.23 g oxygen gas

After the reaction: 7.31 g of tin oxide. 0 gram oxygen( Fully

Consumed ) Tin ( Unknown)
SOLUTION:
Mass of elemental tin + Mass of oxygen gas = Mass of tin
oxide +mass of oxygen gas + mass of elemental tin
• 25.34 g + 1.23 g = 7.31 g + 0 + mass of elemental tin
• 26.57 = 7.31 + 0 + mass of elemental tin
• 26.57 – 7.31 = mass of elemental tin
• 19.26 = mass of elemental tin

Check : 25.34 g + 1.23 g = 7.31 g + 0 + 19.26 g

26.57 g = 26.57 g
