Solar Energy
Lesson I
Solar Energy
Brief Summary
India has a ambitious program to promote solar energy to replace
conventional source of power generation. Solar Energy sector is a very fast
growing sector and roof top solar PV power plants are becoming increasingly
popular. Solar Technologist must be familiar with
• components of a solar energy system,
• location suitable for solar installation ,
• basic electric connections and loads in houses
• should be able to calculate size of solar roof top system and
• identify appropriate components of solar power plant for roof top.
Solar Technologist could be for you if you like:
• Designing optimum solar systems
• Have a Problem solving skill
• Fixing things and working with equipment & machines
• Using computers and tools
Test Project Summary:
• Basics of electric systems, power / load calculations of a house
• A detailed description of the task the customer wants to be solved by a solar system;
• Identification of a suitable space / location to put up solar rooftop plant
• Decide suitable size and components of solar plant as per customer requirement and space available
• Design configuration of the solar Plant to meet customer requirement

Energy For Development

• Energy is ‘prime mover’ of the development process.

• There is a direct correlation of energy consumption and economic growth of a society

/ country.

• Economic growth calls for increasing use of energy.

• Challenge is to meet the energy needs in a sustainable manner

Choice of Energy Resource
The quality of life of individuals and societies is quite dependant on the energy choices

• Access to energy resources, or lack thereof, affects human development, health, access to
education, socioeconomic status, and the environment.

• The security of a nation is dependent, in part, on the sources of that nation’s energy supplies.
(for example, a nation that has diverse sources of energy that come mostly from within its borders is more secure than
a nation largely dependent on foreign energy supplies)

• India is fortunate to have in-house diverse sources of Energy, including Non–Renewable as well as
Renewable.
Coal, fossil fuel , Natural gas / Wind, Solar, Bio Mass , hydro
Energy Scenario in India

• Our country has been facing challenge in meetings its energy needs and providing
adequate energy of desired quality in a sustainable manner and at reasonable
costs.

• Electricity is the most widely used commercial energy

• Three-fourths of total energy used in rural areas is in the domestic sector

• Traditional biomass- fuel wood, animal dung, crop residues account for over 70% of
domestic energy used in rural India
Indian Power Sector at a Glance

Total installed capacity : 3,74,199 MW

•Renewable contributes 90,399 MW – 24.15%

•If we take large hydro under RE – 36.37 %
Renewable Energy in India
Renewable Energy is contributing over 24.15% in the total installed capacity of power generation in
the country with Installed capacity of 90,399 MW

Sustainable Development - a Concept

• Sustainable development can be classified as development that meet

the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future
generation.

• Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting

human development goals while at the same time sustaining the ability
of natural systems to provide the natural resources and
ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend.

Sustainable Development

The concept of sustainable development can be interpreted in many

different ways, but at its core is an approach to development that looks
to balance different, and often competing, needs against an awareness of
the environmental, social and economic limitations we face as a society.

• Living within our environmental limits is one of the central principles of

sustainable development.
• but the focus of sustainable development is far broader than just the
environment.
• It's also about ensuring a strong, healthy and just society.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

• Sustainable development is about finding better ways of doing things,

both for the future and the present.

• We might need to change the way we work and live now, but this
doesn't mean our quality of life will be reduced.

• The SDGs came into effect in January 2016, and they

will continue guide UNDP policy and funding for the next 15 years.

NDC – COP21
2015 was a historic year in which 196 Parties came together under the
Paris Agreement to transform their development trajectories so that they
set the world on a course towards sustainable development, aiming
at limiting warming to 1.5 to 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels.

Through the Paris Agreement, Parties also agreed to a long-

term goal for adaptation – to increase the ability to adapt to
the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate
resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in
a manner that does not threaten food production.

NDC – COP21
Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) are at the heart of the Paris
Agreement and the achievement of these long-term goals.

NDCs embody efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and

adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The Paris Agreement requests each country to outline

and communicate their post-2020 climate actions, known
as their NDCs.
