The Internet of Things[IoT]
 “Internet of Things refers to the concept that the Internet is
no longer just a global network for people to communicate with
one another using computers, but it is also a platform for
devices to communicate electronically with the world around
them.”

Refers to uniquely identifiable

objects (things) and their
virtual representations in an
Internet-like structure

WHAT IS SMART HOME??

 Smart home technology intelligently gives you an

ultimate control over your home by automating the
things like: lighting system, electrical appliances ,
audio and security system.

 Smart home technology also makes the automatic

communication with in the surroundings possible ,via
the internet or
mobile phones
TECHNOLOGY-STRUCTURE AND
ELEMENT

 In general the components are divided in to:

 SENSORS- Monitor and measures activities in the surroundings.

 ACTUATORS-Perform physical action.

 CONTROLLERS-
 Controllers make choices based on programmed rules and
occurrence .

 Controllers are microprocessors often built in with sensors and

actuators . They receive and
process values from sensors or other controllers.
 CENTRAL UNIT-A central unit is useful for the re-
programming , maintance and changes in the system.
 Some units are delivered with their own central units.

 NETWORK-The network is the transmitter of the signals

in the system . the most used transmitter are Signal cable
(twisted pair), strong current cable(power line)
Radio signals(RF).

All modern smart home system has a Bus Based network.

HOW IT WORKS?
 All the appliances and devices are receivers
and the means of controlling the system such as remote
controls or keypads are transmitters.
For example:
If you want to turn off a lamp in another
room, the transmitter will issue a message
in numerical code that includes the following:

An alert to the system that it’s issuing a

command.
HOW IT WORKS?

An identifying unit number for the device that

should receive the command.
And
A code that contains the actual commands as
“turn off”.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMINOLOGY

 There are different types of terminology used to

built a smart home. Some are given as follows:

(1)-X10:
-> X10 is a signaling technique for remotely
Controlling any device plugged in to an electrical power line.

-> X10 signals ,which involve short radio frequency bursts that
represent digital information , enable communication between
transmitter and receivers .

->X10 technology transmits binary data using the Amplitude

Modulation (AM) technique.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMINOLOGY
 X10 does have some limitations i.e
Communicating over electrical lines is not
always reliable because the lines get “NOISY”.

Due to this the advanced home automation system

used Radio Waves to communicate.

The two most prominent radio network in home automation are

“ZIGBEE” and “Z-WAVE”.

Both of these technologies are mesh network that

means there is more than one way to reach
destination.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMINOLOGY
 Z-WAVE-:
 Z-Wave uses a source routing algorithm to determine the
fastest route for message.
 Each Z-wave device is embedded with a code , and

when the device is plugged in to the system , the

network controller recognizes the code , determines
its location and adds it to the network.

Z-BEE-:
-> Zigbee is a protocol for communication amongst devices
used for home automation and uses RF signals for signaling
and control.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMINOLOGY
 The key features of Zigbee are low power , robust,Mesh
networking and its interoperability.

The Zigbee was built on top of IEEE802.15.4 standard which

defined the characteristics of the Physical and Medium Access
layer for Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN)

INSTEON:
Insteon offers a way for your home network communicate
over both electrical wires and radio waves, making it
dual mesh network.

If the message is not getting through on one platform

It will try the other.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERMINOLOGY
 Instead of routing the message , an Insteon device
will broadcast the message , and all devices pick up
the message and broadcast it until the command is
performed.
SMART HOME SYSTEM
SMART HOME SYSTEM
 For your home to be a smart home, you need to integrate a
variety of sub-systems. The most common elements of a
home automation system include:
 Lighting

 Turn on a single light, a group of lights or every light.

 Lights can be set to the desired level at each location.

 Smart switches/dimmers are available to control practically

any kind of lighting load.
 Lighting control can be retrofitted into virtually any home.
SMART HOME SYSTEM
 Shades/Blinds
 Replace your existing manual shades with motorized models
that can respond to commands from your automation
system.
 HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)

 Save energy by automatically raising or lowering

temperature set points to avoid heating or cooling an empty
home.
 HVAC control be retrofitted into virtually any home.
SMART HOME SYSTEM
 Security

 On top of calling a monitoring company and alerting

authorities, a security system can be integrated as
part of a home automation system.
 Irrigation

 Control your home's landscape irrigation system.

SMART HOME SYSTEM

 Pool/Spa
 Pre-heat your pool or spa before you get home so that the
water is ready when you arrive.
 Be notified if there is some failure in your pump system
so you don't return home to find your own Black
Lagoon.
 Entertainment

 Get your party started by playing your favorite music

playlist in every room of the home with a single button
press.
 Here are some examples of smart home product and
their functions :

CAMERA will track your home’s exterior even if

Its pitch –black outside.

VIDEO DOOR PHONE provides more than a doorbell--

you get a pictures of who’s at the door.

MOTION SENSOR will send an alert when there’s

motion around your house ,they can even tell the
difference between pets and burglars.
DOOR HANDLES can open with scanned fingerprints or a four-
digit code , eliminating the need to fumble for house keys.

AUDIO system distribute the music from your stereo to any room
with connected speakers.

CHANNEL MODULATER take any video signal-- from

security camera to your favorite television station and
make it viewable on every television in the house.
ADVANTAGES
Smart homes have the ability to make home life more
convenient.

It is energy efficient as compared to traditional systems.

Smart home technology promises benefits for an elderly

person living alone.

Time saving.
CONCLUSION

 Keeping in mind that technology is rapidly changing,

it is important to recognize how technology is
changing how we function within our households.

 It is estimated that in the next 10 years 90% of new

homes with come equipped with some form of
networking, programming and automation.

 The future home is a “SMART HOME”
