What is unbalance?
The concept of balancing
Types of unbalance
Balancing, before the SMC…
SMC EMPOWERS
THE MECHANICS!
The balancing steps

■ Free run
Take a vibration reading of the machine without any
modification. It will be used as “Reference”

■ Trial run
Put a known weight at a known place and check what is the
impact on the vibration of the machine

Trim run (optional)

■ Balancing run
Based on the impact of the trial run you can estimate where If the result is not good enough after
to put a corrective weight to fix the balance the machine the balancing run, continue with the
trim run
The only question…
Balancing: 1 or 2 plane??

If L/D < 0.50, single plane.

 If L/D is greater than .50, two plane.

single plane two plane

Balancing
Single Plane

■ For single plane balancing:

 Reference Run single plane
 Trial Run #1

 Trial Run #2 (second plane)

SMC Balancing Setup
Important things to know
Weight position: in Angle or “custom unit”

■ Degrees (360)
■ Holes (e.g. 12)
■ Blades (e.g. 6)
Sensor position: always compared to 0°

■ Accelerometer and Tachometer

positions are ALWAYS set:
o In angle (°), looking at the machine IN THE
SAME DIRECTION as the rotation of the
shaft
o With the reference at 0° always on the top
of the static part of the machine
Tips for a good balancing

■ Make sure you have unbalance problem with your SMC Supervisor
■ Make sure you don’t have a soft foot problem before balancing with your SMC Supervisor!
■ Remove the dirt before balancing (fan, turbine…)
■ The trial run must be differentiated enough from the free run. If the two results are too
closed to each other, the balancing process may be difficult  To do so, input the
approximate rotor mass to get an automatic estimation of the trial mass with the
SMC!
■ At every step of the balancing procedure, you can select if you remove the previous mass
or not and select from which run you perform the balancing
■ For obvious safety reason: Make sure you tight correctly your trial and balancing
weight!!
