WHAT TO DO IN AN
EMERGENCY
If you have a thorough knowledge of first aid, you can give
help in the first few minutes of an emergency that can
save a life. First aid can be the difference between life
and death. Often it does make the difference between
complete recovery and permanent disability.
By knowing what to do you will be better able to perform
first aid properly.
Observe these priorities when the facts of the situation
are not known, when the extent of illness or injury is
unclear, or when the injured person is unconscious or
unable to explain.
1. Check the scene and the victim. Do not put yourself in danger.
2. Remain Calm
3. Call or ask for help if you need it.
4. Send someone else to get professional help. The person telephoning
for help should state the detailed situation of the victim.
5. Examine the person in a systematic way, such as from head to toe.
6. Care first for the most life-threatening condition, such as severe
bleeding, absence of heart beat or breathing failure. If you are
trained in CPR, be prepared to administer it.
7. Care for shock or act to prevent it.
8. Know your first aid limits. DO NOT attempt any procedure that you
cannot do efficiently and confidently.
9. Protect the injured or ill person from further harm. DO NOT move
an injured or ill person unless that person is in immediate danger.
10.Stay with the injured or ill person until professional medical help
arrives.
CHECKING FOR
RESPONSIVENESS
STEP 1. Check responsiveness. Tap the victim’s shoulder.
Shout near victim’s ear: Are you ok?
STEP 2. If no response…Look, listen and feel for breathing
for 5 seconds. If the victim is not breathing, he is
unconscious, Call or send someone for help – for an
ambulance.
STEP 3. If you send another person to call, check victim
while the other person is calling. Position victim on back,
while supporting head and neck.
STEP 4. Tilt the victim’s head back and lift the chin.
STEP 5. Recheck breathing. Look, listen and feel for
breathing for about 5 seconds.
If the victim is not
breathing, you must
immediately perform
